I have been approached by GreenAer re a photo I took of their car

“…..First of all I d like to congratulate you for the fantastic pictures you have displayed on Flickr, I live in Gallery Quay and would be very familiar with all the different shot locations.

Our company GreenAer is distributing the REVA car that you shot in front of the Clarion a short while ago. We were wondering if we could use this picture for a press release ?( a journalist has asked us some high res pictures and yours is a lot better than ours…) ….”

Now I have never been approached before like this, so advice regarding copyright, do I charge & if so what amount etc… would be appreciated

    Photo in question..

    Cheers Steve

Of course charge. They’re a business after all.

Make sure you restrict usage to the Press Release if thats all they intend using it for. Find out if it’s just an irish press release or in multiple countries.

    Charge appropriately.

Of course you charge. PR and press release??? Should be a nice earner.

Ask for specifics of use – once off, poster ads, newspaper ads, etc. These will all determine your cost.

You’re probably looking at a few hundred Euro at least for it. €200-300 maybe, at the lower end.

Why not run a quick check on Alamy? You need to ask GreenAer for their usage requirements first and then just plug their criteria into the Alamy Stock Calculator. Doing this, I cam up with a fee of €65.00 based on Editorial Usage in a Consumer Magazine at 1/8 page for a print run up to 10,000 and a duration of 6 months. Alternatively, you define the usage criteria from the outset and set the price accordingly. They are then free to use the image as they see fit without any extra cost or bother, provided it falls within the terms of the usage criteria you have set out to them.

Whatever you do, don’t price yourself out of the market, they will just laugh at you. They know the going rates for these things, so be realistic in your expectations. Oh, and as it’s a stock image, you can only work off stock rates.
