Photobox – What happened???

I recently asked which were the best reasonably priced online photo printers…..

General feeback suggested I should try Photobox

Received my prints yesterday in the post, and the majority of them are much darker than what I had processed them to be.

Is this a problem with my monitor, photobox or is it just bad luck?

I’ve found photobox prints can come a bit dark, but not a huge amount. Maybe your monitor….have you calibrated it? Another clue could be found in your photoshop histogram.

If you’d like to post one of the offending photos I’m sure people can tell you fairly quickly….

It sounds like a problem at your end Andy. Try adjusting your monitor using the advice here http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php.

Send Photobox an email explaining the situation, and I’m sure they will send you new prints of your altered jpegs for free.

Andy, I’ve encountered the same problem with Photobox. Although I haven’t calibrated my monitor either. I find a lot of the high street printers produce darker prints than what I’d like. My Epson R340 is way better.

Ask them for a (free) calibration print that you can use for colour matching, also they’d be processing in sRGB colourspace, so make sure you’re using or outputting the same. They’ve a help topic on dark prints too!

And from another topic on ICC colour profiles:
“It is important to note that the Fuji Frontier printers currently strip out any embedded profiles in your images, so you should ensure that your images are submitted in sRGB. You can also use our calibration print to adjust your screen to match our output as closely as possible.”

I had the same issue when I first used them. I work in sRGB normally, my monitor is calibrated and haven’t had anything to complain about since really.

I have the same issue with darker prints…usually just brighten them a bit more than usual b4 sending them off.

I would be wary of photobox
1 they won’t answer the phone
2 they only reply to email when it suits them and never when there is a major issue with their work which I found out to my expense

In the interests of fairness, they have never failed to answer the phone to me, and they have always rectified any problems immediately.

I am amazed to hear that as any time I called them I get put on to silly music and I have tried several times
In fact I got so annoyed one time and stayed on the line for 15 mins and still got no reply
    So yeah be VERY WARY

Ask me to show you how I’ve configured my laptop for processing shots at the club next week. There’s 2 important things to keep in mind: your colourspace and most importantly, monitor calibration.

I had a few test shots printed 6*4 before I purchase the large prints. They came in the other day and were exactly as I had expected. Previous to doing the above configurations, I found my shots would be darker. Not Photobox’s fault, just that my machine was not set up right.

Just another thing to watch for – I got my first few shots done in A4 from Photobox recently. I had one image taken of my eldest after his communion and the flash gave reflections in his teeth. I enabled the “sharpen for print” option on Photobox for other images but also mistakenly did so for this one too and it came back where the bright spots looked like fillings as the process had made dark rings around the bright spots to sharpen the image overall.
They’re a bit more expensive than http://www.foto.com but fast and the other images were as expected (calibrated monitor, etc) although I do like the matt finish from foto.com. It’s a pity foto.com don’t do A4 sizes as it’s easier to mount using a standard mount cut.

I’ve had a couple of prints which had a majority of green in them come out undesirable – I would like to think it’s a calibration problem at my end… but I still feel the colour reproduction isn’t 100%.

Still.. in saying that, I’ve had some amazing results from them so I can’t complain, pity it’s a bit selective though.
