Photographing Kingfishers

A friend and I go fishing on a very quiet river near Woodford Co.Galway that runs into Lough Derg. We’ve seen a pair of Kingfishers fly past us a few times carrying back minnows upstream. They pass maybe every hour with 10-15 minutes between them. I’ve never seen them perched but my friend has. One might sit perched for about a minute about 30-40 feet away from the hidden place he’s seen them from. Its fairly overgrown and dark.
Anyway, I was wondering what kind of camera would we need to get a good shot?

You will need a telephoto lens with a bit of reach maybe a 300 or 400mm and if
it is dark a fairly fast lens also f2.8 would be good, but if he is perched then you
will have more time to compose and shoot so fast lenns is not critical. Paitence is
the thing you will need in abundance! Once you are well hidden and there is a
suitable perch nearby you will have a really good chance of catching them. They
dont seem to be picky about where they perch so you could rig up a perch nearer
to you if you only have a shorter lens. Good luck….look forward to seeing them
    soon :)
