Photography Degree???
-
chrisa380Participant
Hey All,
I’m being made redundant this year and, after 25 years of working in a factory doing something I hate, I’m toying with the idea of going to college as a mature student and doing a degree in something, the only thing I have an interest in is photography, and there is a 4 year degree course available.
So, my question is this, in your honest opinion would it be worth doing?????Chris
nfl-fanParticipantI’m not sure what sort of openings a Degree in Photography would create.
I suppose the bit you haven’t told us is what your future expectations would be if you were to attain a degree?
markcapilitanParticipantAs kinda said, a degree doesn’t guarantee anything in photography. It definitely helps with some areas of photography, while with others it’d be a complete waste of time. It depends on what area YOU want to pursue.
bigalguitarpickerParticipantEducation is never wasted, except on those who don’t want to learn. Sent you a PM.
brianmaclParticipantEducation is always good to have, but I have been running First Point Property (mainly a photography business) for over a year and I have to say that the business side of things are as important as if not more important than the photography, at least while starting up.
chrisa380ParticipantThanks everyone for your replies!
The reason I asked in the first place, is that in an ideal world I’d go off and get my degree in Photography and get a job where I was able to enjoy getting up in the morning doing what I love and be able to make a decent living at it too!!
But, as we are all too aware this is far from an ideal world, so I don’t want to “waste” 4 years doing a degree in one thing only to find out at a later stage it’s basically useless, as there are little or no jobs in the field of my choice. Now before everyone in unison says “education is never wasted”, I completely agree, but, there are plenty of educated people with degrees and masters queing up to sign on and even more are flipping burgers, so I suppose I’m viewing this as a one time oppertunity and just want to make the best choice I can.I’ll let you know what I choose, I seen a flyer for night classes in brain surgery ………………

jessthespringerParticipantIf you have a look at the course perspective it should give you a bit more information about what modules and assignments are to be covered, it might be a bit vague, but someone at the college should be able to either speak to you or sent you information via email to help answer your question.
I’ve recently made an application for a degree in Photography myself and it’s my understanding that it’s not set up for those looking purely for commercial gain. It’s more about the Art, the chance to really develop ideas and work on personal projects. From what I can make out from people I have spoken to, it seems it would suit those interested in Photojournalism and Documentary style photography. As well as those who may aspire to exhibiting at a higher level. I’m sure there are many other aspects to it as well. This is just some of the feedback I’ve heard.
All very much about the Fine Art side of things. There may be other options for you though, like say a degree in something like, Creative Imaging, which would include things like graphic and web design as well as photography, giving a broader skills base, which may make you more employable. Some of these courses include modules on Business Studies, which may be helpful if you were considering setting up on your own.
It might be wise to also consider other courses, like a HND or something. HND Photography has a really broad scope, covering both commercial and fine art aspects, you will learn a lot about the technical side of things. Which may not be the case with a degree level course. It may be expected that technical knowledge is already pretty good at that level.
Anyway. I’d say the best thing to do would be to speak to the college and perhaps a few students, don’t leave it too long either, you might now be cutting it a bit fine for courses starting in Sept/Oct 2010
Good luck!

chrisa380ParticipantSinead,
Thanks for the input, all advice welcome. I’m making some enquiries at the moment and waiting on some phonecalls too, so like you said I’m doing my research bit forst before I make up my mind.
Thanks once again.
