Photography jargon?!?

Ello! So, I’m quite very new here… Let’s say 5 minutes old to be honest!
And I’d consider myself to be a beginner – I don’t have an slr, although I would love one, but all I got is a lil pink dinky digital camera.
Anyway, because of all this, a lot of the jargon I’ve come across is confusing, so I’m wondering could someone fill me in on some important phrases etc? Like what is raw, for example? I presume it is a photo that’s completely unedited and straight from the camera? Or not? Just need to know the basics, really. Thanks guys :)

Most Dslr and some compacts would have RAW facility, it is basically an unedited file that is not
ready to be printed, you would have a greater scope for editing a raw file than a jpeg, you would
be able to change white balance, exposure, colour etc, consequently the RAW file would be huge
as it is uncompressed, jpeg however the camera has done a lot of the processing for you so files
would be smaller (taking up less room on the card and your computer) and can be printed straight
    from the camera.

There are lots of easy to read books that will give you all the basic information, and google can be an
invaluable source of info too. But the best way to learn is get out there and take photographs, trying
all the different settings your camera will offer you will soon pick up the best settings to use in all
the different circumstances you will find yourself in.

    Hi Caitriona.
Not sure how complex or basic your “lil pink dinky” camera is but even the most basic of cameras will be capable of taking a good pic if used properly. Of course you’ll be more limited than if you had a DSLR but I’m sure you can start getting familiar with some of the more basic settings and more importantly, learning about composition. You could own the most expensive, top of the range SLR but if your composition isn’t good, then it just becomes a very costly “point & shoot” camera.
Anyway, here are 2 links to sites that give a reasonably good explanation of terms you’ll come across. As Jenny has already said though, the best way to learn is to get out there and shoot :D
Have fun learning and don’t forget to post up your images on this site for some constructive criticism.

Ah, thanks a lot guys. It helps.

For the moment I’m still a small bit shy on my actually photos, but sure, what the heck, I’ll throw one or two up there :)

    Thanks! :)
