BCLadParticipant
hi people… i’m looking to get more into photography and for my birthday coming i have asked for a subscription to a magazine.. my question is what is the best one to get.. i’d like one that has good info on techniques etc..
thanks… bcstephenMemberdont bother, most of them are rubbish. you will find out more online for free.
SeaviewParticipantYes there’s a lot on the web that can be quite useful especially you tube for tutorials, That said magazine also have there advantages, if you’re a Canon user I found Photoplus very good and they also have a CD each month on Photoshop tutorials.
Dave.
emjayParticipantAs already said the WWW is king these days. Sites like this one – Photography Ireland – as well as several others are terrific.
They provide lots of examples of photography of different types – landscape, portraiture, still life etc etc. They also provide articles and discussions on technique, equipment and everything you could possibly want to know about. The web is also interactive; you can ask specific questions and get other peoples opinions.That being said I think you can learn quite a bit from magazines and books. As far as magazines go, two of my favourites over the years are Practical Photography (a monthly mag) and Amateur Photographer ( a weekly mag)
Best thing you could do is drop into your local newsagent and browse through a few just to get a feel for which one might suit your needs.
Personally I would regard a subscription to Practical Photography a very acceptable birthday gift :D
bigalguitarpickerParticipantI used to buy all the mags on the newsstand, then I realised they all recycle the same info eventually. Finally threw about £500 worth in the bin. Having said that though, I sometimes buy Photoshop Creative. A good read, CD Tutorials and quite informative. As a member of the Royal Photographic Society, I get the RPS Journal more or less monthly. The British Journal of Photography is worth looking up. I don’t know if it’s on newsstands, or by subscription only.
Ger 208kParticipantHave you considered Kelby Training. They do on line training in photography as well as photoshop. I’ve only seen clips on U tube, but they seem good. I don’t know the pricing, but you can check out the link http://kelbytraining.com/live/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
MurchuParticipantI would echo the above advice to seek out technical info elsewhere. The WWW is a great resource, and books can be very targetted on specific areas too. If seeking a magazine subscription myself, I would be inclined to seek out one that was a publication for disseminating and sharing great work, and have long considered taking out a subscription to Lenswork, although my disposable income precludes me from doing so at present.
IsabellaParticipantFOAM (photography museum of amsterdam) magazine is great for contemporary work. they have a good website too where you can look at the kind of stuff they publish. doesn’t have lots of tekkie info though
Gone2themoonParticipantCutting against the grain here but, a monthly photo-mag subscription will see you inspired each month for at least a year, will give you resources to follow up on and will give you something to read as you improve your knowledge and skill. As for which one to choose? go with the free CD!
UndercrankMemberIf you happen to use EOS gear I can very much recommend EOS Magazine. It has always had a very high standard of content that encourages creative shooting. There’s a digital version I used to subscribe to. Online material can be very useful, though at times some websites just don’t have the professional balanced background you can rely on.
