Photography mags?

Not sure where to post this so trying both here and digital photo fora… sorry for repetition!
Looking for advice please.
If I was to get a subscription for a digital photographer (semi pro) to a photography magazine, which one would you recommend?
thanks!
salsamartinkingphotosParticipantCould this be for a christmas present ???? It if is I would suggest maybe getting a gift card or voucher for your
local bookstore of choice and let the person select their own magazines throughout the year.
I find its the articles in a magazine that attract me rather than a particular magazine as such, having said that I
find Practical Photography and their website (http://www.photoanswers.co.uk) good.
Also bear in mind that in some situations book shops/newsagents will have a particular issue before your subscription
copy arrives in the post.Martin.
DeeboParticipantI have just cancelled my subscription to Photographly monthly. Not a bad mag but it lacks real content and meaningful articles that I am learning from.
I plan to subscribe to this mad in the new year http://www.dslruser.co.uk/news.php I have read several of the past articles and they are more thoughful and better content/. I find most of the other mags just print large images to make up space.Dee
ChristianpParticipantI wouldn’t know which one to get, but I’d recommend NOT getting Practical Photography. It’s a god mag (I actually have a subscription) but there wouldn’t be much useful info for a semi-pro.
It’s a bit entry-level all together, even for me and I’m not even quarter- or eighth-pro :)emjayParticipantI think a lot of people do learn from these mags. I have been a reader of
Practical Photography (Monthly) and Amateur Photographer (Weekly)If you are new or newish to photography, you will learn a lot about photography from one of these mags.
However after you have read them for a year or so, they do tend to repeat themselves, so the learning curve falls off.
The internet is now replacing mags to a large extent. Sites like this one and several others are great and provide
the opportunity to interact with other photographers as well as get feed back on your photographsIf you wanted to try a magazine for a year, I would recommend Practical Photography.
randomwayMemberI am not a subscriber to any magazines, but I buy Zoom whenever I see it somewhere. It’s a large format magazine, almost A3 size with superb prints and interesting articles. ( http://www.zoom-net.com/common/us/home.asp )
A friend of mine works in a magazine distribution agency and he collects the unwanted samples of Outdoor Photography and Photo life for me… I don’t want to tell him, but I hate the OP as most of it’s pages are filled with ads and not real content.
ThorstenMemberThe various professional organisations (the MPA, the SWPP, the BIPP, etc. etc.), all have their own trade magazines which are aimed squarely at the professional. Outside of those, I think there are only two other publications which genuinely cater to the professional (or aspiring professional) photographer. One is the British Journal of Photography and the other is Photo Pro magazine. Photo Pro magazine is now the only UK magazine that I buy regularly as it features a good mix of news, business related articles and technical articles. Outside of that, my photography magazines comprise such titles as Harpers Bazaar, i-D, POP or Vogue. You’ll find more great photography in titles like that than you ever will in any photography-specific magazine.
stcstcMembersalsaMemberwow! lots of advice!
I’m toying with dslruser at the moment, I quite like the look of that one as it’s quite specific.
will continue to log on and see what others think… not many shopping days left though! (you guessed it – christmas present)
IforParticipantI found magazines generally repeating themselves over the years especially the ones aimed at the mass media. I stopped buying them years ago.
Who needs photo magazines when we have sites like this one and many others!
andy mcinroyParticipantI quite like amateur photographer magazine because there is less repeated technique and more news and interesting features on real amateur photographers who are passionate about their subjects. There are always lots or refreshing articles rather than the same rehashed reviews etc.
It’s also nice to have it popping through the door weekly rather than monthly.
Might be worth a look.
