Photography with a Technical Background
-
AliParticipant
From my experience on photography/model portfolio sites it seems that alot (and i could even extend that to the majority) of photographers come from a technical background – I.T, engineering etc. I think it’s more than a coincidence so i would be interested in hearing some opinions on this. Am i the only one that has noticed this?
GCPParticipantYou may well be right. I was in the main-frame Computer industry for many years both in electronics, quality assurance and finally in engineering. My backgroung would be almost completely electronic. During my time in the industry I never did much pf anything with software if I could avoid it and pass the book to someone else………..then, of course, software was not as “friendly” packaged or as userfriendly as it is now. In the late 70’s into the 80’s we had to almost write software from scratch using such “horrible” stuff as Lucid, Pascal, Cobal, Fortran…….(no Microsoft back then) Did a little on C++ but its long gone from the brain. Then we had V.M.S.
I bowed out then having started the photography business and I bought my first PC………….an Elenox 88C with 640k memory and a 20mb hard disk running on MS DOS V5.0….cost ?1245.00IR in 1989
andy mcinroyParticipantAli,
I think it is because photography is an art as well as a science that it brings in people from all sorts of backgrounds (not just traditional “artists”).
My personal background is physics and I have always been interested in light. My scientific background has allowed me to get up to speed in the technical aspects of photography very quickly and allowed me more time to work on the artistic side.

SteveDParticipantRecently graduated in bioengineering! I fit the trend! I’m feeling like such a nerd right now.
Although, at school I was always terrible at art so maybe photography is the only thing which could unleash my creative side.
RobertoMemberAli, I was study science and have MSc but same time finished study of swimming trainer. After few years I studied art photography in Prague.
Am I technical type? I don’t think so, specially not in IT.
I am hapy that I can upload my photos and do some small changes…
I can not imagine to work with the ‘monster’ Photoshop. :lol:FajitasParticipantgerardkParticipantI had noticed that before too – not sure if its down to digital cameras and computers as I dont think the amount of techies into photography in the days of film would have been as high. I would have been strong into art since secondary school – but work in the I.T. area.
joolsveerParticipantNerdy IT background but have taken courses at NCAD (National College of Art and Design) about 20 years ago to temper computer science courses. No photography courses though.
ciaranParticipantWell I’m with the geek crowd too :!: I came to photography, not because I was interested in the art, but more so from technical gadget lust. I always loved the idea of digital cameras from the gadget point of view LONG before I realised photography would become my “art” (God that sounds even geekier). I think digital photography does have a particular appeal to people that use computers and software a lot.
ThorstenMemberDitto on the above… Except that I’ve also been a long time film shooter since way back when (the 80’s to be exact)!
LoGillParticipantMy name is Lorraine and I’m a …….
Nope – breaking the trend here.. I’m a non-techie – often referred to as a complete technophobe ;) I’ve always been into creative expression though, from writing to splashing about with paints (wouldn’t call in painting) … I got into photography recently when the other half got fed-up with me telling him what to do with his photographs and put a camera in my hand saying “feck-off and take your own pictures” .. so I did – I haven’t looked back :)
Lorraine
RobMember… and a musician/composer here, but had to get into the technical end of things regarding computers because of the advent of digital recording. Ain’t technology just wonderful! 8)
AliParticipantWell i’m glad i wasn’t just seeing things. :) Nice to know where all the geeks are and that i’m not alone  I come from a software engineering background myself.
FrankCParticipantCan I say “me too” on the techie thing. I also noticed it.
However, I thought it might be skewed by the fact that we’re the most like people to be using an internet forum.

I think you could be right! I mentioned this site to a few of my “non-technical” photography friends and I have yet to see them surface here :(
