so, anyone participating in, organizing or attending any of the many events occurring around the country to do with this festival? A large community of photographers in ireland and not one mention of it?

There are a couple of things going on in Limerick for anyone interested – an exhibition of New Irish Works in Ormston House from today (open 12 – 6 Wednesday to Saturday or by appointment) and part of The Library Project reading rooms will be hosted by Occupy Space on Rutland street from the 18th accompanied by talks and discussions…

unfortunately it’s the same old story for us up here at the top half of this Island…..we get looked over as usual….once you go past Dublin everything seems to stop….Donegal is a part of the republic of Ireland believe it or not and it would be good to see someone putting something on for us country folk

Yes, I think this tells all you need to know about the promotional efforts of those involved, unfortunately.

cathald, I wouldn’t take it too personally, even in Dublin, its common to see underwhelming promotion with such regularity, one can only conclude the folks responsible for promotion are scared of success..

thinking about it i dont know how i came across it first.. probably by going into the gallery of photography last year when it was on. that and keeping an eye on the jobs and opportunities section of visual artists ireland.

there is something happening nearly every day in dublin for the month of July… loads of stuff i would love to go to but cant be goin up and down every day…. this is the third year (i think) of the festival which lasts the whole month of July… this is the first year that anything is happening outside of Dublin, with exhibitions in cork and limerick.

I hope it will grow more over the next few years….

they have a website, although apart from the catalogues, Facebook and those sorts of places i think promotion is down to the individual venues (of which there are many) A friend of mine said he saw ads on the telly though…

Yeah, my issue about the whole thing, is you have to go out of your way to discover it. I think the ads on the telly sums it up, as obviously the promotion seems to be handled by someone who only sees the glamorous side to it, ie print and broadcast ads, and is unable to simply roll up their sleeves, and get down to the task of actually promoting the event far and wide. I don’t think its too hard for example, to sign up for a few free accounts on places like PI/ etc, and get the word out to their target market. A little imagination and hard work promoting the event would go a long way, imo, especially now that the whole affair is in its third year and they still haven’t sorted out such fundamental issues.

All that aside, would like to see it grow. Any opportunity to see good photography is welcome in my opinion, and just find it incredibly frustrating to be able to conceivably miss the whole thing through inept promotion.

Anyway, leaving down my knobbly cane right now.. :)

i would imagine its not down to deliberate snobbishness. I believe a lot of it is run on a voluntary basis. obviously there is a big budget for advertising in the belief that throwing money at it will make it work… which of course is necessary for certain areas but also a large amount of time and hard graft required to keep on top of the rest.

I do know what you mean, and have similar reservations myself but at the same time begrudgery doesnt make the world go around…

True, and hope my previous post did not give the impression of begrudgery, as I would like to see the event do well. Unfortunately won’t be in Dublin this month, but must take a peek at the programme of events and see if there is something to see if I can make a trek for.

I wonder what are the standout events/ exhibitions in people’s minds in this years festival

    nothing it would seem…

well im looking forward to the sideluck event, which comes to limerick on the 18th… should be interesting and is something which has traveled around the world and had quite a few famous names participate. i saw the call for entries alright but didnt get together a submission on time.. seemingly you bring along your favourite dish/cake/whatever and enjoy a slideshow of images accompanied by food. sounds like a fun event. will be on in dublin, cork and limerick though one would have to check the website/facebook page or catalogue for precise times…

also there is a talk on photobooks in the limerick city gallery on the 18th at 12 that might be worth going to.

Im heading to Dublin this thursday for the opening of the summer campus at 6 in moxie studios. I got 2 portfolios of work selected for the international portfolio reviews which are being held as part of that over the weekend. many of the reviewers are giving talks on the friday, saturday and sunday which should be well worth a visit.

im also really looking forward to seeing parts of the library project, which is an enormous collection of photo books which is mostly hosted at the copper house gallery (Fire) although parts of it are traveling around the country as part of the festival.
