PI Outing – Glendalough Outing 3rd – 4th October

You can get information and downloadable trail maps Here.
For those not up to hillwalking (including the hungover on Sunday  ) there are plenty of subjects to point a lens at around the lakes and historical centre. Won’t be able to make it myself on Saturday (family christening), maybe on Sunday if the hangover ain’t too bad.

For anybody going on the PI Glendalough outing in October contemplating landscape from heights be aware that it can be quite a trek and the Spinc/Glenealo Valley trail will eat up at least 3.5 hours of your day most of it out in open mountain terrain (absolutely no cover in most parts). This trail probably affords the best views on a good day.
To get to the viewpoint overlooking the Upper Lake / Glenealo Valley you can go up by Poulanass waterfall and then up 600 wooden steps through forest which will be quite hard on the legs right at the beginning of your day. From here you can go back down the steps or continue on around and down by the lake via the Miners Village and back to the car park.
The other way is to start out on the Miners road, out past the Miners Village and start the gradual climb, crossing the river and on up to the Spinc on the boardwalk (made from railway sleepers). You will see wild deer and goats en route and if luck is with you they will be within range for decent shots. As you go up beyond the Miners Village there is a small waterfall and just beyond this before the wooden bridge there is a small gully with a lone tree which given the right light and absence of ‘bleddy tourists‘ should provide for a few nice images.

Don’t forget to have €4 in coins ready for the Upper Lake car park………Mikka

    Hi,

would be there anyone down travelling from the Belfast area?
If so, I’d contribute to petrol costs :)

If nobody from the Belfast area is going I’m sure we could pick you up somewhere on the way through from Donegal

A conversation I would have engaged in with enthusiasm.

    Okay folks,

Nearly there now, I will be leaving Derry at around 6am, so hope to get there by 10:30ish.

Can someone who knows the area suggect a good place to meet and break up into the respective groups.

We can start firming up plans for the day, or do people just want to do there own thing. This will be my first time in Glendalough, so I am clueless with respect to making plans for the day.

    Any suggestions welcome.

the best place i guess would be in the visitor centre car park or the upper lake car park

they are both big so either would work

Would anyone have a google map to both the hostel and the upper lake car park :) ?

Getting lost on the way up is a possibility at this stage :D

I’m pretty sure the hostel and the upper lake car park are literally a 5 min straight walk from one another… they are on the same road and there’s only the one road.
