Super shot Aidan. I’ve managed to photograph quite a few of these
myself, but never quite managed to focus so sharply on the head as you
have here – the little blighters never stay still for long enough. Super
sharp around the eye, great detail…

Thanks Rob. They are sure hard all right. This is the second time in two years I’ve taken a shot of one of these that I feel confident enough to share for C&C. The only previous one was a fledgling who was probably too naive to fly off when I approached it.

This one only came close because some geese were eating some bread that some people had thrown onto the lake side. I managed to get one decent snap as it darted in and out. Tough to expose though with all that contrasting black and white.

You’ve caught this fella spot on Aidan, was it spot metered?

Thanks Noely. Strictly speaking … no. I use center point metering on the 350D; It does not have true spot metering. I was a few meters away so trying to get a reading from either the black OR the white would have been pointless … and near impossible considering how they jump about. Luckilly, I had already metered for the white geese that were also there.

I love to get one of these in nicer light. This was at around midday yesterday.. really bad time to shoot a contrasting subject.

Excellent photo, Aidan! I saw this photo yesterday and I looked away wondering how come I never see this one in my backyard, and guess what was there? One of these!! I tried taking a few shots, but they are are constantly on the move, I found it nearly impossible to frame them (I didn’t have time to change the ISO etc either). I can really appreciate the great job here!
