well I just got done with my first real paying engagement photo shoot. apart from me panicing it went pretty ok. Apart from a few school boy errors, which I wont repeat.
1 Let the camera and lens arm up, I arrived at the house and it was roasting, the camera was at outside temp and the lens kept fogging up. I could not understand why I had such blurry photos , changed lens and still problem. I was almost at panic when I noticed the rear element was fogged, ot the front. I could only get a shot or two before it fogged again.
2 trying to take photos in a room with a low dark wood ceeling of a couple who are both wearing pink (him a pink shirt and her a pink dress) surrounded by pink balloons and roses is not easy and flash is a no no. the problem above did not help either.
3 when its cold , insist on both parties bring long coats. I did tell them bring coats. They were more jackets than coats that they brought.
4 I had not thougjt it would be as cold as it was and had not thought of taking a break for coffee so everyone could thaw out. i suggested a pub near a location that was a back up. when we got there, both pubs were not open. I felt stupid. we did find a third pub and talked about doing some more as we thawed out.
5 Back up locations, scout them well. on this one I had bases covered. We knew there was a wedding shoot going on in the primary location. ( it is a favourite location for those kinda shoots ,lake, forest bridge etc) the couple did not want to intrude. The original plan was shoot there first then do the fun photos in other locations. my couple ran late, so we shor at secondary locations first. It turned out it was a full on wedding in the forest not just photos , The primary location was out, fortunatly I had got the ‘formal’ shots in the bag, even though we planned to do them in the forest.
6 as the day wore on te couple got more in not as fun a mood, it was the cold , but I had it all mapped out in my head. the shot. locations . tide , sunset, light and I was determined to get them. I forgot about their comfort. as I review the shots its easy to see the energy draining from them.Sorry for the waffle, but I thought I would share , and maybe someone wont make the mistakes I did.
I’m sure there are some of you saying, how could he not know, sure those were obvious. well I did but I sure as hell wont againCaroline3000ParticipantThanks for sharing your experiences, sounds like you were up against it! But the beauty of it is you can bring these lessons onto your next shoot. I’m still sticking to friends and family and even get nervous at that! But nerves are good, it means you care about what you’re doing.
