Polaroid portraits…

JohnnyMcMillanParticipant
When I was doing that shoot the other day I took my polaroid 200 along with me, to which I quickly did this…
Which lead me to do this…
And then the next day, while using up the rest of the polaroid film I went around town and did these…
paperdollParticipantJohnnyMcMillanParticipantThe top shoot with the model was for a friends end of MA disertation magazine publication…the polaroids of the street people was cos I was bored in town…pretty simply actually…
I just hadn’t done a fashion shoot as such in a good while and was just doing alot of illustration and blog related stuff so I thought it was a nice change…
Collecting some Holga shots tomorrow that I’m looking forward to!!!
LoGillParticipantExcellent idea.. :)
I absolutely LOVE the second set of the model.. They work really really well with thats shot .
NICE :)
Lorraine
David_SParticipanthey polaroids – my favourite :-)
that hockney has a lot to answer for ;-)

JohnnyMcMillanParticipantIt was actually kinda funny why I did take the shots like that. Cos the model was 5.11 without heels and I only had a 50mm…so I thought what other way could I take shots…hence that idea came into effect so to speak
FlipflipParticipantFintanParticipantAliParticipantLovely presentation Johnny and good idea. I think the presentation really makes the shots work. Would i be as interested in the shots if they were presented on their own ? I’m not sure. I think though, your post demonstrates the importance of a series of shots. Well done!!
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantHeya Ali,
Thanks for the comments. I think the second one of the model might work by itself…(hopefully so, cos I’m gonna post it on confused.co.uk hopefully)…but the other ones were just about having fun with a basic camera. Sometimes people get so worked up about the final end product/photo, that they lose the ability to have fun in the process….and NOTHING is more fun than pelting down a street after seeing someone you could ask for a photo of…and apologies to the Italian girl in the photo who came up to me asking for directions…and I took photos of her anyway….lol
AliParticipantsecond shot definitely stands out. I’ll have to go shooting with you some day, i haven’t exactly mastered the art of approaching people, what usually happens is
1. I see a cracking shot
2. I jump up and down and say to whoever is with me – “Oh look that would be a cracker!!”
3. They say “Go for it!!”
4. I eeek, walk towards the subject, go red, start laughing and blow it :DAn experience. Ask Fajitas. It doesnt happen with inanimate objects thank god
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantI noticed on the day, all you have to do doing something like that is just get the first shot over and done with and then you’re sorted….cos once you’ve taken that first shot, you have something to show the next person as to what you’re doing…same principles as to if you take a digital shot…just show them what you’re doing. Same with doing shoots with models, half the time it’s you and the stylist looking at the photos while the model has no ideas as to what the story is….is she/he know, then they know what they’re doing right or wrong etc…..that make sense?
I’ve just been slightly scared in some respects in taking shots over the last few weeks….who am I kidding….few months, so it was nice to take some shots again. Collecting some Holga shots tomorrow, so fingers crossed that they might turn out okay…
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantWas looking through some other work with polaroids…and thought I’d post up these two…the top one is from a shoot with the Gaiety School of Acting up Bray Head and the second is a project I did for a year a few years ago, taking a polaroid a day for a year…

elludeParticipantHa, very good! Actually I’m not entirely sure if two images are enough to do this effectively (I think Hockney mostly used a dozen or more pictures for his ‘joiners’). The second image above, which uses six pictures, is my favourite. Good stuff!
AllinthemindParticipantWindows through polaroids can be fascinating work and great fun (just expensive, hehe). The modern equivalent, believe it or not, is using a mobile phone to take many windows of a scene and then stitch them together. I’ve seen some amazing pictures produced this way, a load of effort but unique.
