Heading to Sorrento for a week tomorrow and definitely one of the places on my “must see” list is Pompeii. has anyone been there and can they tell me are there any restrictions regarding photography ? Also any other places of interest to view/photograph….bearing in mind that we will have a 5 year old in tow..

I visited Pompeii about six years ago and from what I remember there was no restrictions on photography, Herculaneum which is quite close to Pompeii and was also destroyed in AD 79 would also be worth visit. When we were there we also climbed up to the crater on Mount Vesuvius, this might be a bit difficult for a five year old.
We also took a boat trip to Capri as it is a beautiful island, unfortunately on the day we went, a thunder storm started at 8.00 am and didn’t stop until 8.00 pm. We saw very little of the island as it was too wet to wonder around. The only good thing about the trip to Capri is that we’ve agreed to revisit the area in a few years to see it better weather. :D :D

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. One other thing. Is there a lot of the exhibition indoors and how is the lighting ? Would you need a flash or would a 50mm 1.8 work ?

Mark, from what I remember the rooms are quite small so a flash would be fine, I had a look at my pictures and they are bright enough and they were taken with an old point and shoot. I would bring a wide lens as there are some lovely wide open spaces.

    Mark,

Theres a ‘lagoon’ about 15 minutes walk out of sorrento which may prove fruitful. It’s west I think (on main road leave the town with the sea on your right)

In addition, grab a local bus and check out the rest of the amalfi coast – positano and amalfi are both very photogenic, as is Ravello (where I got married) which is up in the mountains above Amalfi.
