Poor man needs a camera! What should I get???

Ok. As the title says I am absolutely smashed right now. Had to sell my cameras to get me by. Which was a nightmare! I’m not going to let this recession get the better of me by putting photography on hold. It’s a great pass time when out of work. I don’t really drink and I get great pleasure out of photography and learning/experimenting new stuff. The only camera I have right now is the 5megapixel camera on my phone. No compact, not even an old film camera.

I have a budget of around 200Euros. That’s at a push. I would love to get my hands on a Canon 450d as i had one before a while back. But know my budget wouldn’t allow me for that. I have been also debating whether I should try out film as I might get more bang for my buck that way.

I wonder what peoples opinions would be which one I should choose.

Would be nice to stick to digital and find a nice gem of a bargain. Really don’t know which second hand digital cameras I should aim for or even be able to afford.

If anyone knows of models that are great value secondhand (been thinking Panasonic LX5 for example) please let me know. Even if you have spotted something that might suit me on Donedeal or on Adverts.ie than send me a link or a PM.

Any advice would be great anyways. A lot of different ways I could do things and I don’t want to just waste my money and end up with something that would make me unhappy.

    Thank you guys.

I don’t have much experience of digitals myself, outside of a compact I have owned for years, I only recently got a digital slr myself having been using film slrs for years, so I could not say what to look for or avoid.

From personal experience, when it comes to choosing a digital or film camera, the main thing I would say is, with digital, no matter whether its on a cameraphone or dslr, the one advantage over film is you can take as many or few photos as you like, and all you have to worry about is the cost of charging the battery, and only print what you want, where as with film, you have the cost of processing and printing, unless you can afford your own darkroom. Film does have some advantages, but the main disadvantage is the cost of processing, and maybe that might make you think more about composition and settings before you shoot something.

I think you should look at a nikon dslr. All there old lenses fit the crop sensor models. So if you could pick up a cheap body, then over time you could expand your focal lengths with manual lenses. Check out Thom Hogan for more on nikon crop dslr and manual lenses and a list of what lenses work. Bit of hunting will find a list on his site. Check ffordes photographics and mpb photographics for secondhand prices. They are usually at the high end for prices but do come with a warranty. Also check camerapricebuster in the u.k. for daily pricedrops. I shoot canon now and their old lenses dont fit new dslr. I think thats right, could be wrong. There’s also a website ukcameras that has a list of other camera shops on it. think that it. Any hassles send me a email, almorrisphotographygmail.com
    Good luck, take care

    James,

Try a post in the Equipment Wanted section too. You never know whats out there.

The only Nikon DSLR you’ll probably get for your budget would be a D70 (great camera had one). You probably wouldn’t blow
the budget too much with a 50mm 1.8 thrown in.

On the film front, the choices are endless. You’d probably get a Nikon FE and a 50mm for around €100.
Developing is easy tbh, but you’d need a scanner or darkroom to see the result if you did.

    – Thanks Nigel. That info will help me make up my mind. Digital cameras certainly have advantages over film cameras. I don’t have the means to set up my own darkroom but would need to factor in the cost of processing the film. Nice to be able to shoot as many photos as I’d want with a digital.

    – Hi Al! I did not know that old Nikon lenses fitted the crop sensor models ;) Thanks for going to the hassle of writing all those websites out for me and attaching your email. Much appreciated. I am going to check them all out now. I want to find a camera this week if I can.

    – I will do that Mark. I’ll place an ad today and hopefully like you say I might find something that will suit me. I’m going to check both of those Nikon models out. Will have a look on Flickr too and see what photos they are capable of taking. I think I will more than likely stick with digital. Makes life much easier. Cheers mate.

    Hi James,

Sorry to hear you had to sell your camera gear.
I hope things get better for you soon.

You may find something for the budget you mention but I think that if you could manage between €250 and
€300 you probably have a better chance of picking up a used body and lens.

Heres an example of an irish shop that has a couple of examples for under €300.

As has been mentioned you should keep an eye on the for sale section here.

I hope you find something as photography is not only a great hobby but it can take
your mind of other things, at least for a while.

    All the best,

    John.

Just regarding the Canon lenses Al, I have a Canon Eos DSLR and an Eos 300 film camera, the film cameras use EF lenses, and at least 95%, if not 100% of the EF film lenses can be used with the Eos Digitals, but the EF-S lenses are designed for the Digital Eos cameras and don’t work on the film. Canon planned that when they were designing the Digital Eos range. On the mount of the digitals, there should be 2 marks, 1 red dot, and 1 white square, the red dot is for lining up the film lenses and the white dot is the digital lens mount mark. I know a couple of others who use Canons too, and they seem to have a mix of digital and film lenses, and when I was getting the digital, they said that the full range of film lenses work on the digitals.

John, I think you are right. I will try and extend my budget a bit to get my hands on something better. I have decided to stick with digital! Thanks for that link mate. I have had a look at it. Have dealt with Conns beforehand with used equipment so might pop in and see have they got anything for me. Photography certainly is a great hobby ;)

I rather like the Olympus Pen1 or even the Panasonic GF-1! I want something small that I can carry around with me the whole time and that gives good results. The Olympus E-520 seems like a nice camera too. The Micro Thirds system seems pretty cool. Also been thinking of getting a compact or a ‘superzoom’ camera. I like street photography too so a camera that could be esily used ‘in the field’.

Would like to hear from others as to any camera models in the above category which would suit me for a budget of around 300Euros. :D

No matter what I will buy, I will update this thread. Might be useful to other people to show what can be bought on the market for a small enough budget secondhand.

not strictly correct….. its not a film/digital divide the ef-s lenses are designed for digital cameras with a small sensor…. thus the size (and cost of producing) of the lens is smaller and as such cannot be used with full-frame eos cameras (digital or film) whereas all eos cameras can use ef lenses

I will have to take your word on that, as my experience of digital is limited to a second-had Eos D that I got in March. I was only going on information that the man who sold me the camera in the camera club I am a member of told me, and to be honest, anyone who has a Canon in the club told me the same thing. If thats not the case, then I do appologise, I just based my post on extremely limited knowledge, and thats why I said that 95%, as I was not completely sure. Just that the Eos D I have came with an EF-S lens, and I had a couple of EF film lenses that work fine on the Eos digital, and I don’t think I was hinting that the EF-S lens would work on a full frame camera, sorry for the misunderstanding :)

    Hello Mark!

Thanks for those links mate. I got sorted late last night. Picked up a Panasonic Lumix G10. Less than a week old and for 280quid. Absolutely delighted. Really nice compact camera and a nice size when bringing it around with me and cool the way I can change lenses too. Still learning some of it’s functions. Feels like Christmas!!!

I just want to thank everybody from here that has helped me out with advice. Really great bunch of people on this forum :)
