I am wondering how these are rated by posters here –

They do look like a poor mans studio – but in terms of portability they could have their benefits. However I have read mixed reports – so I was wondering if anyone here has any experience of using them and if so – what are they like – any caveats before buying ?
PS I wont be buying for a good long while yet (if at all) – just looking to get opinions in case. Also – where do people buy photo studio portrait backgrounds – is there anywhere in dublin that does them or is it an online business ? Also do they much of a choice in terms of design, colours etc.
_brian_ParticipantGer ,I bought a small hama box for doing product shots ,it folds up for storage.
I’m sure they come in bigger sizes and all you need then is a lamp for smaller stuff.
Or you could get some white material and attach it to a pole and leave it hang from a certain spot and roll it up when finished.Just a few thoughts ,I’ve all saws and welders for making stuff ,I could easily make something up to hold up material.
gerardkParticipantIs it one like this picture
(if you scroll down on the right hand side)

? Just came across that about an hour ago – that looks cool for macro & product ones and stores away so no extra room needed for it.
_brian_ParticipantNah ger ,the one i have is only a box made of material ,with a reversible material for the backround blue/grey.
One of the reasons i got a flash is for this kind of stuff ,I was amazed at how easy the short depth of field is with a flash. I thought the pictures would come out over exposed.KPMParticipantHi there,
I bought my backgrounds in Data Micrographics Ltd. at the Portobello Bridge along the Grand Canal.
Not cheap however, you can get the standard canvas rolls & paper rolls and also the stands to support them.
I went with Lastolite portable backgrounds which fold up neatly and also are double sided, they have problems, mainly with the width of them when opened (6 feet) – sounds a lot but a very narrow field, but I find them great. Two minutes to set them up and two minutes to take them down and fling on your back seat. They also take up very little space at home so scored a few brownie points.
The website for DML is http://www.dml.ie but it really doesn’t tell you too much, best bet is to drop in.
Another good supplier with very prompt delivery is http://www.karlu.com. Works out around the same price as DML but they have a lot of gear on their site. I ordered some stuff from them on a Monday and it arrived Wednesday am.Hope this helps

IOPParticipantJM Photo (http://www.jmphoto.ie) in Kilmainham do Falcon Eye flash kits, they have a 2 light setup with stands, gels and softbox for ?280 plus VAT. They also do backgrounds.
Another place for studio kit is Barker Photographic in Cork (http://www.barkerphotographic.ie). He’ll deliver as well I believe and he’ll be at the Croke Park Photovision Roadshow.
AnonymousParticipantYeah i would second that as what KPM suggested using Karlu, very fast and great choice pf paper backgrounds, they also come in 9 foot wide rolls so you can saw(yes saw) to your spec.i also got the expan system to support them all in all cost about 450 Euro for system and 6 rolls.
Stay away from Canvass(they mark very easliy) Vinyl is ok but is very heavy and expensive and finally the muslin stuff creases a lot. Also try http://www.studiokitdirect.com and talk to Peter, great advise and keen prices.
Otherwise if you like homegrown stuff give Stewarts a shout and talk to Robert there as they have some of that stuff on show, think they are agents for studio-decor UK so they would have everthing from lights to backgrounds.
Best of luck
