Portrush Airshow 2007

It was an overcast/semi-good weather day, I got there a wee bit early to find some good sopts (I was at the blackrock side of the bay). I eventually found a few places and went back to the jeep to wait for the first ones to come in…
The man on the PA system started waffling about 15mins later so I went and took up my post, when I got back I found::: 2-4 Pro shooters -they had that distinguishing motorsport cap (canon of course ) equiped with 70-200s (mostly), 100-400s and some had a 16-35 but quickly changed it to their tele. What suprised me that only a few had 1D’s! Mostly 30d’s or 400d’s!
:: about 10odd shooters with 20/30d’s and 70-200 f/4
:: And then one beast of a shooter (pro obviously) who had about 3-4 bodys with a 400 mm f/5.6L, a 70-200 f/2.8 IS, and then a beast of a 600/600mm f/4L (with a white hood too!) mounted on a tripod with a 1D MkIII (which sounded like a shika lol [google it] )
It was a great loss if you didn’t get out there… I was really craving a longer lense
Overall it was a good day, even though my photos where crap (from the ixus500 [haven’t seen the film ones yet) and every time I could get a descent photo (with the 50mm or the ixus), The pro’s where taking about 5 (and the pro with the 500mm took about a bazillion with his markIII [What suprised me was he took shots even when the plane didn’t look that good :?, I think he was just showing off, or slagging me and my 1fps film shutter clunk and advance noise ] ). The acrobatic planes (red-arrows, the blades and wingwalkers) where the best for me (and my camera), they came nice and close to the shooters and showed off a bit aswell which was a bonus!
O yea, here be a few of those crapish photos are here:

(C&C always welcome! And excuse any severe softness/extreme cropping [blame the camera ;-)] )[sorry for the extra long post, I just felt like telling my story ]
jb7ParticipantThanks for the story of em, barrel envy-
can be a real pisser alright-I had a look at your pics-
your pile of stones stood out, for some reason-
I suppose it shows that you’re a hardcore photographer-Then I noticed a cover for a stone catalogue called Walford-
that has to be a made up name-Is that your picture?
looks like a Lutyens house?Oh, and I saw the airplanes too-
very nice-j

RavenAshMemberPeteTheBlokeMemberGood one JB.
And thanks for the story Trailfox. I enjoyed it.
Maybe we should have a story-telling section (Mark? You could call it “Once upon a time”).trailfoxMemberOK slow down there jb
I’ll put up what I said in the thread those photos where for (photog forum on MTBrider.com)…
Speaking of which, I do a bit of that myself I’ve started doing the advertising work for Walford Natural Stone (my dad’s business). Their previous advertising designs where that done by the newspaper/magazine, and man where they ugly, so I saw an opertunity and went and redesigned (so far) their newspaper/magazine landscaper’s ad, their business cards, their letterheads (a simple redesign at that), and I’m still working on a ‘natural render’ dash booklet for sending out to potential/existing building contractors/plasterers.
Hmm… I could probably tell you what the company is all about, but that would just be like advertising on MTBrider (which I dont think is allowed, is it?)
I posted up my work so far (including the 1/2 done booklet), I know it’s a photography forum but C&C is welcome anywayHardcore photographer to the bone 8) The 2 piles of stones (taken fresh from the stockpile yard, (washed (by hand) and dried (by hair-dryer, very hardcore ;-) )) where and example of how I prepared them for the 1/2 done A4 leaflet (I wanted to know if there was an easier way to remove the background other than the pen tool-make selection-eraser-drop shadow sequence I had to go through because the tediousness (is that a word?) of it was getting to me :).
Story section, that would be a spiffing idea pete (would add an interesting twist to our photographic escapades), but maybe that would be too many sections on the forum?,
Mark? Mark!stasberMemberGood story – thanks ;)

“ouch” is all I can say. I recently did a shoot and trawled through some 700 pics. Got them down to about 240, with the customer getting 50 of those. Why 700? Cos I had to review as I went along and delete any obviously crap, as I was running short on memory and the shoot just kept going and going…10 hours in the end.
The ‘spray and pray’ technique doesn’t always guarantee a usable picture. I’d much rather go through 10 well aimed shots than trawl through 45 almost identical ones to decide which is “the keeper”. Especially if it’s a paid job like. No fun in spending hours working through craptopia  :D
trailfoxMemberI see what you mean about ‘spray and pray’ but is that not a beginner’s technique. When I knew I couldn’t reach the aircraft on some of the displays I listened to the pros shoot and most of them only took 1-2 shots whereas the fella with the mkIII took abou)t 5-8! I thought that pros where ment to be good at thinking of what sort of picture they want and then work from there, not take a thousand photos and trawl through loads to get a few that look documentable.. I cant speak much because he might be on here ;-)

Alright lads, own up, who here has a MkIII and was at the airshow over da weekend like?
I’m starting to spray a little in my dance jobs as you’re never quite sure about the apex of a leap, for example. But sure, indiscriminate machine gunning is heavier on the ‘pray’ end of the equation. More like pray your computer hardware can keep up with the onslaught!
Sgt_MajorMemberI was there on Saturday too – Down on the beach front. Not yet looked properly at my pics as Ive been away with work all week. Will look at em on Monday and post.
Sgt_MajorMemberjb7ParticipantWorth waiting for-
some great shots there-So were you the guy taking a bazillion shots?
Come clean now-
j
Sgt_MajorMemberlol – I was the skinhead guy with the wife and 2 kids standing beside me bored to tears who just wanted to go to barry’s and get candy floss and ice cream, then go on the rides and be sick on daddy on the way home :D
All day I took about 300 shots. But Im only an amateur, so Im allowed :p
stasberMemberWow, some great shots.

That reminds me
President Bush was out enjoying a round of golf, when his officer came up to him with some news.
“Sir, we have reports that a Brazilian was killed on the streets of Havana today”.
The news shocked Mr. Bush. He looked pensive for a few moments and then turned to the officer,
“Remind me… how many exactly is a brazillion again?”
I’ll get my coat.
