Possibly daft new boy question: Mid price Nikon lenses

AndyLParticipant
Hi guys, first post on a topic here so go easy on me!
I’ve got 1n 18-55 kit lens on my recently upgraded to Nikon D300 that does the majority of my work, and a 55-200VR for a Tele zoom.
Looking about for better quality glass it seems Nikon either do budget stuff (the ones I’ve got!) or rather expensive lenses like the 12-24 f4G or 17-55 f2.8G that would suit me nicely (i do mainly landscapes and some mountain biking action shots in low forest light).
Put simply, is there such a thing as a reasonable decent lens or am i asking for the moon on a stick here? Any suggestions gladly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Andy
DarrenGParticipantI use the Tokina 12-24 f/4 for my landscape work. I’ve always been very happy with the results from it and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than the Nikon equivalent but does not look/feel cheap. It’s probably not the best for mountain biking as you would need to be very, very close but the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 might be a good option for this. Only letdown for this lens, is the slow AF but I guess for mountain biking you can prefocus on an area.
MarkKeymasterI have the Nikon 12-24 and its great, however I will say that alot of members here like DarrenG
love the Tokina and Sigma (10-20) models. The Tokina seems to rate highly.Would agree on the 50mm 1.8, one of Nikon’s finest lenses and a must have for almost no money
new. They’re cheap because they’re easy to make and they sell loads. With low light in forests, you’re probably going to be challenged with most lenses. Although something
with VR would help I guess. You could try using some flash also, if it was some friends you were shooting
who didn’t mind the distraction. No doubt wouldn’t be allowed in race conditions though…AndyLParticipantThanks guys.
I think a 50mm f1.8 is a must, and those Tokina’s are reasonable form Ebay. Now to hop forums and ask about importing stuff from Hong Kong!
MartinParticipantThe Tokina 12-24 is a great lens, build quality is excellent on it. The sigma 10-20 is supposed to be very nice also and has an extra 2mm at the wide end which people find a real +. For me i went for build quality so i went for the tokina, i get the extra 2mm by walking backwards if there is not a wall or a cliff edge behind me:-)
