Took this a few hours after getting my 350D, used all my money buying the camera so had to rely on the bins on O’Connell street for support, they did a fine job i must say :) and yes i know the traffic lights are in the way but i don’t think the Gardai or the local council would approve of me lifting them up, not to mention the traffic chaos :D
PixelleMemberLovely pale light or is it colour?
Me, I’d like more sky than pavement in this one, it is such a clear luminescent blue.fishjam45Participantjoe_elwayParticipantRodcunhaParticipantearthairfireParticipantnolongerParticipantI like it. The streetlights don’t really detract from the shot at all IMO… makes for a nice city shot.
ExpresbroParticipantLovely shot Sancho… the camera is obviously working well for you from the off. Maybe you should have held on to this one and entered it in this months Photo Assignment..I’m pretty sure it would have picked up quite a few votes!!

8)Madra RuaParticipantThis is brilliant. Great composition and perfectly exposed (imho).
To me every single light adds something to this shot.
The street lighting, the lighting of the GPO, the traffic light with all three colour ‘on’, the passing cars and busses (I guess that’s what the upper red trails are), the windows, the neon signs, the residual light in the sky, dublindaveParticipantSANCHOMemberstasberMemberYes! I really like this shot. It’s clean, well composed, the trailing lights as well as street lighting work very well. The traffic lights add something to it to, I don’t think they’re in the way at all – funny how when you’re taking the shot, some “things” just seem to ‘get in the way’.. but shot taken, and they seem to fit into the story quite well. There’s a lot of foreground which I don’t think detracts, given the horizon and all the lines leading to it. Well done.
RobMemberI’ll just add my compliments. Great shot Sancho. Keep up the good work.

SteveDParticipantNice shot Sancho, and as you already know, I love this type of urban shot. I know you didn’t have a tripod, but don’t be afraid to use your camera bag as a rest for the camera. Yes you will be low to the ground, but it will enable you to get more of the building and sky into the image. It will allow the pavement to become more prominent in the scene and could provide a few interesting lead-in lines.
Thanks for agreeing to let me show my edit here. Although I think your image is great, I think it needs a touch more contrast especially in the pavement area.
I basically built up soft light layers, and used gradient masks to stop the statue vanishing into the dark! The mask with a multiply blending mode helps cut some of the ‘glare’ which is impossible to avoid when shooting such an image.
No doubt there will be lots of people who prefer the original, but if anyone wants to see how each of those layers affects the image I would be happy to send the PS psd file.
This is just a suggested way to finish an already nice image. We will have to go shooting in Dublin sometime.
