I am a student of digital media design and part of my course is photography which suits me fine as I do it as a hobby..
For one of my projects I am planning to try and photograph sensitive scene’s such as the corrib gas field protest site,
where can I get a student Press pass or something that will differentiate me from the protesters so I wont be attacked by the guards, or vice versa (protesters thinking I am a guard)…
There used to be a time when being a photojournalist afforded you a degree of protection, but sadly those days are long gone. A press pass will not guarantee your safety and you are just as likely to come under attack by either side if either side feels that you are being unfair to them, and it doesn’t take much for them to feel that way these days. Have a look at Editorial Photographers and you’ll quickly get an idea just how much photographers’ rights are being trampled on by authorities all over the world. Whenever you go into an area where there is tension you are likely to become a target. All you can do is take what reasonable precautions you can, advise both parties that you will be there and what your intentions are, keep your eyes and ears open to what’s happening and hope for the best.
Go to the NUJ website, http://www.nuj.org.uk and you can get student membership from there.. ?37 for the year.. This will entitle you to a student press pass..
