Why is there still no post code system in the South? The UK system, is excellent and with GPS there is no reason for non-deliveries – except for very remote addresses.

Postcodes would be helpful as my address is my name, a region, a town, a county and that is it….the region is a reasonable size, I am really based half way between two towns and bar the postie who basically learns where everyone lives it must be a nightmare! I do know my gps settings for our house but it feels kinda weird to add my GPS location to an address :)

What is the benefit or a postcode?

probably a silly question but the post system actually works well,

    I think “£$*&%^$.

The post system works well because the postmen/women know the addresses from knowledge of the area rather than an understanding of a “system”. It starts to fall apart when you use deliveries services that don’t know where your address is, e.g. Sam Smith, Ovens, Cork.

The benefit of the UK post code system is that the delivery drivers can key it into their GPS and be led to your door (or very close).

But yes, if it is an Post and there is no change in staff for the last x years, then you’ll get your mail – but not your new 450D via XYZ Couriers.

Well it depends on where you live…my postie knows where I live but if she changes or goes on hols, it takes time for the new one to get our mail right….letters arrive with not the (slightly different surname) in (another region of the same area). Couriers have a nightmare finding us….I guess it depends on how urban you live as to whether your post is easy or more complicated.
Having lived in the UK, postcodes do work and in many ways make sense. It can be argued with our population that there is no need for them but an example of how rural deliveries go wrong….today due to non delivery of an expected parcel, we have just discovered that the courier who was meant to deliver it could not find us, he left it in the local post office, alledgedly left us 2 phone messages to tell us it was there (niether of which where to our phone numbers) and only for we rang the seller who tracked it down it could have stayed in the local post office forever….as it is, it has been there since last Thursday! All in all I am not against postcodes :)

    Yea makes sense all right.

Some stuff did get left on a shelf in a warehouse for a while for me as the
DHL driver didnt know where Currylaur was !

shure who would know anyway. :)

    Yea a lot handier.

I think the issue is that the house doesn’t have a number more than anything. I also work in another County and would have had it delivered to work but first deliveries need to be to billing address. If they couldn’t find a regional hospital – then I’d be worried! Yes to post codes but more importantly yes to polite people when trying to explain locations!

Here is a huge thread on post codes in Ireland

Some of it makes interesting reading.

I shouldnt have opened my mouth!

Post codes: They are supposed to be coming, the work has been done, the system designed….. but who knows when! Not having post codes makes it difficult to sort shipments to the correct destination, having them would solve that as the code woud identify exactly where the delivery address is situated, reduce missorts and help the courier find it. I believe Ireland is unique in not havng them (in the EU).

Addresses: I am not making excuses, but the amount of inbound (to Ireland) shipments with incomplete of wrong addresses is amazing. You may enter the address perfectly well in the website, but it doesnt necessarily appear that way on the parcel. Townlands are notoriosly tricky to track down, the post might go there every second day, but even though its covered by a couriers route, he/she might never have to call at all, until you are waiting on that kidney or spleen.

Phone numbers: If there is a phone number provided, in general DHL couriers will call the number if they have difficulty (I know as I have seen the bills!). In a lot of cases though, what you enter into the web ordering platform, doesnt materialize on the actual parcel.

All that said ( and I could go on), although couriers may (rightly) be able to quote 99.9% (or whatever) on time delivery, considering the volume, that 0.1% can be still too many…. and its Murphys law that its the beating heart (or horse urine sample) that goes pear shape. Unfortunatly too, its human nature for us all to remember (and vocalize) the bad expieriences and forget the thousands of good ones (via DHL/UPS/FEDEX or whoever).

Sorry for the rant – which is my personal view by the way and not a company statement!

I will reiterate folks, if any of you (in ROI) have a problem or are holding your breath for that new body etc – if its wth DHL, drop me a PM and I will try to help.

So, the topic was prices going up I believe?

Priceless. I wonder does this happen in other European countries? I could imagine socialist France being a bit like that – albeit that the French are big on beauracracy (spelling?) – although thay use Post Restant (collect from post office) a lot.

    What about Italy, Gizzo?

I’m sure Greece with all the islands has some interesting addresses.

So, prices and exchange rates …
