Hope people can help me, I’m thinking of getting a prime lens for my canon 60d maybe 50mm or 35mm ,
What advice can you give me

    Hi Dave,

I’m a Nikon man, but I know that most people would recommend a 50mm 1.8 (not necessarily over a 35mm of course)
They’re cheap, super quality and pretty much a must have.

Can’t comment on the 35mm, but if you need that bit of extra width, perhaps for some street photography, then it’d be useful.
    Hard to decide really.

I use Nikon also, and have the 35mm for it, nice lens but have heard
nothing but good for the 50mm, and as Mark said it is reasonably priced
and a must have for the camera bag.

yep agree with above, i have the 50mm 1.8 II, decent enough at 1.8, but at 2.8 and up you get excellent quality shots, motor is a little noisy and all plastic, but cheap.

When I moved over to my DSLR, the guy in the shop sold me a 50mm 1- 1.8 II. It stayed in my bag for the longest time, but one day I took it out and forced myself to use it and now I absolutely love it. I wouldn’t go anywhere without it. I’ve got some great portrait shots with it. I agree with Phillip – it looks a little plastic, (I haven’t really noticed noisy) but the quality of the shots leans towards excellent.

I only have my Nikon 50 1.8 for a few days now and I must say I’m very impressed. It’s just so small light and nimble you don’t really miss having a zoom ring. Now it did take me the guts of an hour shooting with it to get used to it. What I like is that it makes me work a bit more. Leaning over desks to get the shot was new compared to just turning a ring.

You’re probably in the same situation as me a few weeks ago. 35mm or 50mm. Well what swayed me to the 50 was the fact it is compatible with a full sensor should i ever upgrade. Another reason was trying out on my kit lens (18-55) 35mm and 50mm. I found that the 50mm was more to my liking and I could comfortably shoot two-eyed.

Anyway here was my first day with it

I’ve had the 50mm 1.8 and now the 50mm 1.4. I loved both, though the build quality of the 50mm 1.8 is poor, that’s and slightly better autofocus were what made me trade up. One thing to consider is that on your 60D which has an APS-C sized sensor if memory serves me correctly, the 50mm will give an equivalent field of view of approximately 70mm. Canon also make a relatively inexpensive 35mm prime, which opens to F2. This will be about a 48mm field of view on an APS-C camera. Traditionally in photography courses, tutors recommend starting out with a 50mm prime, which is why is called a “standard” focal length. If you close field of view to the human eye. A 50mm lens on your 60D will be a bit tight, perfect for portraits and headshots but not so much general photography, whereas the 35mm, (giving an effective focal length of 50mm) will be a great all-rounder lens. I’ve seen fairly well promo videos comparing the 35mm F2, which costs about €200, to the 35mm F1.4L, at over €1000, and they concluded that unless you need maximum sharpness at F1.4 and tank-like build quality, there isn’t much point going for the L lens. I started out using a 50mm field of view and it is still my favourite focal length. If I had to pick a “desert island” lens, it would be my 50mm, so I would have to recommend going for a 35mm, (again 50mm on your system) and building from there.

Love the 50 1.4 and the bokeh it produces :D

My bad, I was working from memory, looks like the 35mm F2 will cost about 300-320 new according to ebay. If you have the patience to save another little while, I’d still go for it, if not i’m sure you’ll be very happy with the 50mm 1.8 also.
