A little seed planted in my head a long time ago has been nourished by the fact that I’ve come across a Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L and a Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 L USM II for sale on the second hand market in the UK, at ?550.00 and ?389.00 respectively. The seed in question is the idea of replacing my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG lens with a range of Canon L-series prime lenses within that range. Both to the aforementioned L-series lenses are excellent performers. I’m sorely tempted to get both of them as they make excellent portrait lenses, but realistically I cannot afford both at this time. I’m leaning towards the 135mm at this stage as it’s a faster lens and probably a more suitable length on an APS-C sized digital camera.

I’ve read the reviews out there and know the pros and con’s of each but would like to hear first hand experiences from users here, if there are any. The third lens that I ultimately want to get to complete this arsenal is the EF 85mm f/1.2 L USM II, but that is one very expensive lens and not one I plan on getting anytime soon. In terms of the principal uses of these lens’, it would be mainly portraiture.

Thorsten….I can’t comment on the 200mm, but the 135mm is amazing. The bokeh on that lens is incredible. IMO get the 135mm and leave the 200mm. The 85mm would complement the 135mm well, but think also about the F1.8 version…I’m getting that soon as I don’t want to stretch for the 1.2 version and price (and slower AF).

Just looking at the specs, I’d go for the 135, the close focusing would be a winner. Nice 8 blade bokeh too.

Sorry I dont have real world experience of these lenses.

Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L ordered. Can’t wait to get it now. Hopefully it will arrive before the weekend as I have a shoot planned for Sunday for which it would be ideal. Fingers crossed!

Next on my list – Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 :D Decided I couldn’t really justify the cost of the f/1.2 L version at this stage

Good to hear it Thorsten – let me know how you get on with the 135mm f2. I have the 85mm 1.8 and it is definitely recommended. Very sharp lens and nice bokeh.

Wow, I’m impressed. Just took delivery of the lens, less than 72 hours after ordering it from UR-Galaxy. Now just to let it warm up and then I’m off to try it out later this evening (if I get some free time!) :)

How are you finding this lens? Any pics to post?

bought a 50mm 1.8 II today and i’ve a horrible feeling it’s fawlty. The AF works just fine in bright contrasty conditions. BUT in a dark room it’s pathetic, it won’t focus on things and keeps locking out of focus. Anyone else had this problem and is it common or is my shiny new lens not so shiny after all?

Sancho, how do your other AF lenses compare when auto focusing between light and dark situations. If the AF can’t focus it will start hunting and usually focus on nothing or at least not what you intended. You could play around with the AF points but I have found it better to us MF in these situations.

the other lenses are better able to focus in dim light, i know the 50mm is a cheap lens but so is the efs 18-55 but that seems to do a fairly decent job of focusing.
