Can I ask anyone who has had b&w images printed digitally, what they found the most satisfactory option ?

Also, I hear that if you are getting anything printed from those printing booths you see all around, I believe the booth tends to apply some sort of auto corrections to your image regardless of what options you choose at the booth yourself, which is obviously not so desirable.
Has anyone had any experience with this, I wonder ? I’d only heard of this from discussions online, where some go as far to strip all metadata from their images before having them printed in this way, the suspicion being that such auto corrections (regardless of whether you choose them) tend be auto applied on the basis of data from your camera metadata (model, etc).
Any thoughts ?
Just printed some photos at a fujifilm printing booth today. From what I can see, no auto corrections are apply to my photos which I did some editing on Photoshop at home. Hope this helps.

Yes, it would be curious to know the semantics of it, as anecdotal evidence has been mixed, with some experiencing no problems, and others experiencing issues. From what I read, I am inclined to suspect the machine does apply such corrections perhaps, but those corrections may be overridden/ rejected by staff. It seems a bit of a mixed bag, and I perhaps dependent on where one uses. Its probably beyond the scope of this thread, but it would probably be useful info for people here, if we had some sort of list that members could report their experiences/ recommend places to get prints made..

Actually if anyone thinks this is a good idea, please feel free to add any thoughts/ feedback/ recommendations here: digital-prints-where-t52806.html :)
pauloconParticipantGreat debate there folks that makes for some good reading on the topic.
I’m going to get some shots printed (12×8 and 12×10) on Photobox. I’ve done my editing in Photoshop, saved as SRGB and have changed the setting on Photobox to prevent them doing any image enhancement.
Looking to print of a few shots to frame and another couple as posters (for my daughter). I see Photobox gives an option of Matt and Gloss, just wondering if anyone has compared both finishes and if there are any recommendations as regards which to use?
MarkKeymasterI found that b+w with photobox want great. Always had a slight tint to it. Might be ok now of course. You could try stcstc from 360dpi.com too…
I’ll work out what the costs are with the 2400. Btw I was lucky enough to get it 2nd hand from one of the members (Zoltan) here who was moving and had hardly used it.
MurchuParticipantThats a pity to hear about the b&w with photobox, I had been hoping with their variety of print aspect ratios and the option of matt prints, that they might be the one for everything, or at least everything small’ish. Always glad to see a plug for Steve’s (360dpi) work, as saw some exhibition prints he made and framed for a member here a few years back, and was quite impressed. No doubt he would be the one I would turn to for any larger prints, but right now am looking to get started and find someone with whom to get smaller prints (6×4’s/ 7×5’s/ 5×5’s/ etc) made regularly :)
Zoltan, now there’s a blast from the past. I remember when he left, and wonder if his bike took him far across Europe :)
MarkKeymasterMight be worth a test print from then though. They might be better these days.
Must go and find Zoltans blog. See where he ended up :)MurchuParticipantYeah, agree Mark. I was planning on throwing in a black and white or two when having a bunch of colour prints done, and see how they turn out.
Must check on Zoltans blog too, see how it all turned out. Last I checked a long time ago, his bike had broken down, and that seemed to be that. Must actually find his blog address again :)
MarkKeymasterLooks like his blog is gone. http://www.barothi.com/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
MurchuParticipantYeah, seen that. I think I recall him lurking around here in the past, but not sure if he still is, or is still travelling. Probably not the latter, or that would be a hell of a roadtrip! :)
The SnapperMemberWould you not consider printing the black and white in a darkroom, the film shots I mean.

All digital shots in question, so not applicable in this case.
I do have a folder of b&w negatives I need to go through in the future, and may consider wet printing them, should I have the time to do so, but equally I am happy to admit that my abilities in a darkroom would not be enough to coax any quality out of them like a skilled printer could. More likely when/ if I get around to the film negatives, I will scan them first to see what I have, and probably have them printed digitally, maybe fooling around in the darkroom at a later date with the print negatives and dabble in that way.
I do find the darkroom process very enjoyable at times, especially with medium format negatives to work from. I also have a great weakness for the square, and a sheet of 12 6×6 contacts is one of the most beautiful things to me, so how knows, perhaps in the future :)
