Printing problem – tell me what I’m doing wrong

markst33Participant
Hi there,
I recently bought an Epson SX445W printer and Sheldon very kindly profiled the printer for me.
However whenever I try printing via Photoshop CS5 I am always very very disappointed with the results. They are dark, lacking colour and generally very poor quality. I have tried using settings other than the profile provide for me but the results are always the same.
Because I use a laptop I thought the quality of the monitor could be the problem so I got a spare dell monitor from work to use but no joy.
Then I just printed directly from explorer and the results were infinitely better. They actually look like what I am seeing on the screen for a change.
So there is nothing wrong with the printer it must be the settings I am using in PS. I have an screenshot of the settings I am using below. can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.
IsabellaParticipantfor one thing office monitors are not too much better than laptops unfortunately, but if you calibrate it it should help a lot. I had trouble with dull images, very dark etc and it turned out that the dell monitors that were hooked up to the printers were way off. not sure how to calibrate PC monitor/laptop monitor (i use mac)
in photoshop you can set the proof setup in the view menu, don’t use sRGB its very poor. Adobe RGB is better for printing. proPhoto RGB is great on screen and for saving but no printer can recreate that level of color. (i can see that your file is sRGB in the document profile)
I’ve been told to use perceptual rather than relative colorimetric.
in the print settings menu ensure you tell the machine what type of paper you’re giving it.
sometimes i find i don’t like the setting in the printer profile so have a go with other options from that drop down menu
hope some of this is useful. photoshop can produce really really good prints so its just a matter of working it out!
markst33ParticipantPhotomasterMemberHi, have you disabled the colour management in the “Print settings” dialog window?
IsabellaParticipantmarkst33ParticipantHi Isabella,
I have not printed anything yet, but I was looking this morning but I can’t figure out how to s disabledthe colour management in the “Print settings” dialog window.
Have you any idea how to ?
Mark S.
markst33ParticipantstcstcMemberyou have the wrong paper type selected i think
canson say use epson semi glossy if i remeber rightly of the top of my head
IsabellaParticipantlooks like its off to me anyway…
different surface texture settings (gloss/semigloss etc) radically affect how it prints – how much ink is released and how fast it prints as different papers have different absorption rates, so with that one also can be helpful to try out a few settings and find the best match though as stcstc says, paper manufacturers often have recommendations for their papers.
good luck!
stcstcMembertrancemanMemberJust an idea… are you using the same paper as your printer was calibrated with ? Remember that for different papers you need different printer profiles.
markst33ParticipantHi Folks,
still having awful problems. Completely different results when I print from photoshop as against when I print from explorer.
