Problem with Nikon D200

I am having a problem with my Nikon D200 where every so often after taking a few shots I suddenly get “Err” appearing where the Shutter speed should be in the LCD. This first occurred a few months ago in the middle of a session where I was shooting a model as part of a course I was doing.
Its as if the shutter opens or the mirror locks up because when it happens because pressing the shutter button results in the err going but no photo has been taken.
When it happened during the course we tried all sorts of things to rectify it but it seemed that cleaning the lens contacts finally sorted it.
Has anyone else had this problem and how did they sort it ?
