Public Liability

    Hi all,
I’ve done a lenghty search on here and on other photo forums and still am at a loss, I’ve sent PM’s to a number of you whos names popped up in some of the threads I’ve read so far. So here’s the question to the remainder of you reading.
Basically,I am looking at Public Liability insurance to cover me to shoot weddings in Ireland.
I was hoping to find out:
Are there different types of Public Liability?
Which level of cover are people taking?
Will €1.3m suffice or should I shell out for more?
Company “A” has quoted me €130ish for €1.3m and €180ish for €6.5m where as company “B” has quoted €470ish for €7.2m cover.
Am I missing something or is Company B just over priced?
Any small print I should look out for in a policy?
Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Ian

I don’t believe there are any different types.

Me, I took out 7.2m cover, but since I cover international sporting events, this was required.

The difference in cost between small and large is minimal, so I’d always err on the side of caution and get the higher limit.

Sounds like “company B” are highly over-priced. That doesn’t surprise me though. Many Irish insurance companies either don’t properly cover photographers or else are just extremely expensive.

Try getting a quote from http://www.camerainsurance.ie They seem to be one of the best priced on the market currently, and their service is excellent. I know a good number of photographers who have now switched to them. One of the directors there is a photographer himself (Derek Balfe), so knows what is needed and really knows what he is talking about. He is also very helpful at explaining everything.

    I hope this helps.

you sure company B is just giving you publiuc liability

a common setup is public liability & employers liability in one along with some insurance for kit, travel etc

    Paul,
When you said that amount of cover was required, do you mean required by your employer or required by the event location? I had guessed Irish firms would be dearer but multiples of times dearer is just extracting the urine.

    stcstc,
Hi, as far as I know it was for just Pl, that’s what I asked for and specified no Pi. To be honest I don’t think the lady dealing was too sure. I explained that I had gotten a cheaper quote, a much cheaper quote and couldn’t understand the difference. “what’s that quote for?” she asked. I said it was €131 for €1.3m, “well this is for 7.2m”. At this point I gave up and decided to save my breath. They couldn’t even handle the phone calls ffs. First time I rang I got cut off, second time I rang I got put through to a personal mobile nothing to do with the company. Third time I told the receptionist, I won’t be calling back again if I get cut off again. It’s small things like this that are adding up in the grand scheme of how unprofessional this country is becoming.

My insurance is required by the event organiser/location. I don’t have an employer, as such, since I’m a freelance sports photographer.

When I first looked for camera insurance (gear + PL), I was getting crazy quotes from Irish brokers and insurance companies. I shopped around and then found some UK firms who cover Ireland too.

Then last year camerainsurance.ie really expanded their business, and are giving very competitive quotes (as good, if not better than anyone else in UK or Ireland).

Four years ago I got a quote (for 3.2m of PL) from an Irish company for €560. That was just for PL. My current policy with camerainsurance.ie is for 32k of gear, plus 7.2m PL (plus a few other bits and better clauses) and it’s only just over €100 more expensive than that.

    +1 for camerainsurance.ie.
Talked to Derek this morning, sound bloke. Pointed out that the minimun level required by a lot of Public Parks and Castles and the likes, is up around 5 or 6 million. They also had the best quote price.
And Could handle phone calls in a professional manner, unlike another company mentioned earlier.
    Thanks to all that replied.
I sought help. I got help.
    Job done.
Now its on to the CRO.
