Public liability insurance

DaveCParticipant
Can anybody recommend a good policy that would cover equipment, public liability etc?
FintanParticipantDaveCParticipantThanks Fintan,
Waiting for a reply from them, what price would you expect to pay for this coverage?
Have only starting looking in to this so totally clueless, had equipment covered on house insurance up to now.
DaveC
FintanParticipantWell theres all sorts of cover, Ireland only, Ireland plus 30 days EU, Europe plus 30 days worldwide, Worldwide etc.
Then theres the cost of your equipment. For your public liability they will want to know if you have any employees, your own premises etc.
Minimum will be about ?250 for equipment, not sure about public liability.
KPMParticipantMy public liability covers me for EU2.6million, which apparently in the current climate is quite low (The IPPA recommend approx. EU6.5million). There is no studio cover etc. (I don’t have one !!) and it covers on site shoots, hotels, schools etc. This costs me EU560 a year. This policy is with Eagle Star which I got through a local financial advisor.
Am still investigating the equipment insurance.

FrankCParticipantAlso, I confirmed at the ‘Focus on Imaging’ show that Towergate now operate in Ireland.
They give a discount for members of the SWPP or the IPPA.
The insurance covers lots of things including equipment and public liability.

CianMcLiamParticipantI just got a policy for ?330 for one year through a friend in a brokers, covers public liability for ?2.6m but not equipment. This was on the basis that my turnover as a ‘business’ (which I’m not) would be low. As projected turnover goes up, I’m sure the cost will too as all brokers I spoke to asked about this first.

Kevin, they say 6.5 million because many public places and government buildings and state bodies demand that as a minimum cover level.

I did get them to quote for my business while I was at Focus …… just to see if they were better than our IPPA deal.
and even taking my LIPPA plus my LMPA discounts off they were more than double what I presently get it for and my
public liability would be only be 5 million and no employers liability cover at all.DaveCParticipantI rang around some of the Heritage sites around Ireland, Kilkenny Castle, Emo Court etc.
I was told that for a photographer to use the grounds for wedding photos, the cover needed is ?1.5million.
?6.5million just seems ridiculously excessive, no idea how the IPPA came up with that figure.DaveC
FrankCParticipantIn relation to the IPPA and their ?6.5 Public Liability Insurance requirement, there is a bit of debate about this on the Irish Photographers website.
I had hoped to apply for IPPA membership at some stage, but some of the issues and concerns raised by existing members have raised some doubts in my mind.

Who is your policy with?
While I’m not shooting a lot commercially, I still need to insure if I want to use my small setup with members of the public.GCPParticipantSean,
my policy is with via O’Brien Finlay in Baggott st. Dublin but is is an IPPA special policy with Sun Alliance.
To avail of this one you must be a qualified member of the IPPA. I would say to contact Towergate UK. They will
do a policy that suits your needs as you may not need the 6.5 million public liability cover.ThorstenMemberGerry – another Q. for you! Is the ?6.5M PL cover a requirement in order to get/keep your IPPA membership active? Seems a bit ridiculous if it is. I mean, supposing you’re a photographer that shoots nothing but small scale still life advertising images in your own studio? What possible use is ?6.5M PL cover to you there?
GCPParticipantThorston,
when the IPPA came up with that figure it was in consultation with some members who were required to have a certain level of cover when they were doing work in certain public areas and for certain public bodies. A survey was done and, of course, various levels of figures were given from 1million to 9.8million. The upshot is really there is no “safe” figure.
A figure of 6.5 was settled on by the majority of the members as being probably more than enough cover for any event.
Many of the members who are big into commercial will still have in the region of 12 to 13 million cover.
Last year also it was pointed out from a legal standpoint that the IPPA as a body could be held to stand over the actions or mistakes of its members so thats why the requirement was set in place. So since Jan 1st. yes, it is a requirement of membership. Already this year I’ve been asked by 3 churches had I my own PL. I am also hearing that the bigger hotels are beginning to demand some proof of cover also, but so far none have asked me.I agree with you that it seems a bit excessive and it probably is…….but when I was at Focus I did get Towergate to do me a full quotation based on the policy I had. First it worked out more for less cover (no employers liability where I have 13 million in my own policy) but on the PL side, the difference between 2million and 7million was just over ?100 stg. more on the premium.
