Pushing Colour Film?
-
jessthespringerParticipant
I recently saw a picture posted on flickr, a holga shot, taken on 400 ISO film, the poster wrote, ‘pushed to 1600’
how does that work? Do you inform the lab?I’ve heard someone else say something about Ilford XP2 (C41 colour process) that it can be rated at any ISO?
What’s the story with all that?
EddieParticipantYes just get the lab( a good professional lab) to push process, they will charge you a premium. I remember a photographer a few years back who used to push cheap colour negative film with amazing results. she just got the formula right. Her subject matter were deamy landscapes and still life. The images were more like paintings than photographs. I would suggest keeping subject matter simple until you get comfortable with the technical process.

From http://ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/20062102012331472.pdf Application Sheet : Push Processing.
XP2 Super is a black and white film processed in C41 type colour negative chemicals. It has an ISO speed of 400/27º yet can be exposed over the range EI 50/18 to EI 800/30 and given standard processing.
jessthespringerParticipantThanks Eddie and Dave…
Eddie, do you have a link to that girls work, it sounds really interesting to me, I’d love to see that.

Sinead, I presume that Eddie is referring to the work of Sarah Moon.
Couldn’t find a website for her but this link shows a lot of her images.
Have a look and enjoy it:

:)
jessthespringerParticipantThanks for that link George, I have looked at her work before, but oddly, not the colour stuff.

Sorry Sinead it was a few years back she was based in Kildare an artist initially then moved into photography for a few years got every distinction available and then went back to her art. No links or internet that I know.
Sarah Moon’s colour work would have that look but I think they are Polaroid based. The look Sinead is looking for I would imagine is more grainy and graphic.
BarkerPhotographicParticipantYou can “Push” Regular B&W film and Colour Transparency film (Usually about 2 f-stops) with great results but Colour negative film won’t respond well ( Colours tend to go in different directions). Generally you just extend the developing time (sometimes temperature).
jessthespringerParticipantThanks Paddy. Have done a little bw pushing, the colour had me curious though.

Not a bad guess Eddie…
I’m not sure I like Sarah Moon’s colour work, it’s a bit floaty, or something, if you know what I mean. It all just reminds me of pictures of Kate Bush!
So, another question then… Where do people buy expired film from?

THis is one you won’t need to go to e-bay for – any camera shop or pharmacy should have expired film they would be delighted to get a € for. I have just a single roll of out of date Sensia (Slide film – dated 2008) which you can have for €1.
jessthespringerParticipantebay – yes, never thought of there!
Paddy – Generous offer, but it might cost a bit more to get it to me, all the way from Cork. I’d say Mark would take if off you for a euro.
aoluainParticipantYep E-Bay !
I got lots of stuff of it.
Recently got 5 x provia 400F 120 format for about €18
5 x fuji NPS 160 120 format for €12
There are lots of deals in USA but shipping to IRL kills it.
Sinead the lab I frequent in Galway has Fuji pro 160C 220 format for €25.00 [5 roll pack] !

I think Paddy hit the nail on the head here ( Colours tend to go in different directions). I think this is exactly what you are looking for but getting contol of this process is the key.
jb7ParticipantColour negative film has a pretty wide latitude-
it’ll take a couple of stops overexposure, and the grain will actually get finer-
it’ll also take a stop of underexposure at standard processing,
at the expense of a grainier, muddier neg-but I dunno, maybe that’s a good thing?
