Question for the professionals!

    Hey guys,

My sister got some professional shots done by a company a few weeks ago. They were paid for, yet the photographer emailed that photos to her so that she could have them printed herself.
However, when he emailed, they were around 800kb in size, and resized to 1440×1200 pixels. Which by my calculations means the max. size she can have them printed without quality loss is about 6 X 5 inches?
Is this a normal kind of delivery for professionals? She paid €40 for both shots, and it just seems to me that she was conned a little.

Can somebody else give an opinion on this? Would be a lot of help, it just doesn’t seem right to me.

    Cheers. :)

It really boils down to what was written in the contract, and what it says will be provided.

For €40, which is very cheap, I’m not really surprised she wasn’t given high quality high res files.

But again, talk to the photographer, and see what was agreed.

    Apparently there was no contract…?

A model release form then? That should have stated what was being done/given in exchange?

I’m surprised there was no contract.

Go back and talk to the photographer.

It depends on what the images were to be used for. Fairly good 10″x12″ prints could be made from these.
She should ask the photographer for larger images if she needs them as he probably just used an action to convert to a convenient size for most applications!
Again €40.00 seems cheap to me but I suppose it depends on what type of picture.

    hi,

The size seems pretty small indeed. The resolution of the pictures is essential. Printers work on 280 PP. If the guy delivers your pictures at the size you indicated, you will end up with 5 x 4 inches prints at this resolution.

The two common sizes for a professional portfolio are 5 x 7.5 inches and A4.

Except if the pictures where taken with a rubbish camera, there are no reasons why the photographer is not able to deliver bigger pictures to your sister. And the price she paid for them can’t be a fair objection. First because no prints are delivered and second because without contract the pictures can only be used in a private circle.

As a conclusion, contact the photographer and request a higher resolution.

    Cheers.
