Raw problem

Hi all. I’m having trouble opening photos from SD cards from my Nikon D80. Happened with several cards. It seems to have something to do with raw, as I’ve no trouble with shots using jpeg only.

It happens with Picasa, Elements 5 and Zoombrowser. Everything freezes and I have to restart. Suggestions very welcome.

The trouble may not be with your SD cards but with the software. I had the same problem with Elements 4. You need to go onto the Adobe website and download the RAW plugin.

Below is the link to the page where you can download the plugin for the D80, just scroll down the page until you see Elements 5 and just follow the instructions. You also need WinZip or PKZIP for it to work. Hope this helps.

Well, Zoombrowser is a Canon app so I wouldn’t image you’d be able to open Nikon raw files with that. You might give Faststone Image Viewer a try to see if it will open the files for you. It’s free and works fast too! I regularly use it as a browser for my Canon raw files because Windows 2000 doesn’t have raw viewing capabilities and when Canon updated their raw file format Faststone Image Viewer was updated before any other app.

At least if you can open the files using Faststone Image Viewer you’ll be able to narrow down the problem.

I presume you’re downloading the files from the card to your hard drive before you do anything with them. If not, I suggest you do so. It’s not a good idea to browse images directly off the card.

Are you using a card reader or downloading direct from the camera using the USB cable?

    You talkin’ to me?

I always use a SanDisk Extreme? 2.0 USB Reader, it’s so much quicker. I use Downloader Pro to perform the actual download because it creates a folder structure the way I want it on the fly and also renames the files as it downloads them making the whole thing easier to manage afterwards. My folder structure consists of a folder for each year, which has a folder for each month of that year, which in turn have folders for each day of the month. These are all created as I download so I have no empty folders as it only creates folders for dates I have images for. Likewise with the file renaming – all files get renamed with a date string followed by a sequential number. Makes it very quick and easy to find files later.

    Thanks for all your help.

Dave, I use the built-in card reader in the laptop.

What I did, in chronological order:
I downloaded the plugin [had tried it a few weeks ago when it worked, but not for long] Everyting froze.
I tred Faststone as you suggested, Tnorsten but it just froze also.

So, suddenly on the nth try, the pictures started to come in. using Elements. Still not sure exactly why, perhaps it was the plug-in as I installed it differently this time.
Now I hope it stays fixed!!! And that I can find something quarter way good enough to post.
    Thanks again.
