Real Men Smoke Players!!
-
ExpresbroParticipant
Hmm…must be losing my marbles. I could have sworn I posted this earlier?
Anyway…a shot taken after the AIMS Choral competition in New Ross. Pat relaxing having a pint and a smoke in the smokers refuge in the Theatre Tavern.
jb7ParticipantGood portrait,
he’s obviously used to having you poke your camera at him-
That, and he’s probably an old thesp,
given the things you get up to-I’d like to see more separation from the girl in the background, though,
or moving a couple of inches to the right would have obscured her completely…Good conversion again,
and good light you captured too-j
ExpresbroParticipantThanks Joseph. I agree about the girl and was considering fiddling around with Lens Blur in PS, but to be honest…I’m too hungover today to be bothered…
By this stage of the day they were all used to me poking the camera in their faces…hehehe!! Anyway, as ya say…Pat is an actor of long repute…so well used to a bit of attention… :D
DenverDollParticipantVery enjoyable.
Love what you were going for. You are always willing to stretch and try the next thing, and it comes out well.
Joseph has good ideas to make it even better. I wouldnt have even seen those possibilities.
Shar
GrahamBParticipantWell i like it.
I agree that it would be better without the girl in the background but thats not the point of a true
grab shot. It’s a good shot and there are enough good points to overcome the very few bad points.
I’m no expert but I’d imagine that trying to blur the girl would cause the smoke to loose it’s impact.
I could be wrong but I would leave it as is so that you do not take away from the shot with too much
processing.just my uneducated opinion
ExpresbroParticipantYep…I think you’re dead right Graham…only occurred to me to me when I had another look at it…the smoke is an integral part of the shot and I would imagine that blurring the girl would indeed take away the impact of the smoke.
So the girl stays…they were good fun anyway..local New Rossians…putting up with us loud mouth (and quite drunken by that stage) Dubs.. :D
LoGillParticipantRobbie …. I love this.. no really LOVE it
The light and smoke is fantastic.. (eh I hope no smoking ban inspectors are looking ;) ) But I would agree with JB that the girl is very distracting and ultimately takes from the image .. as finnicky, irritating annd quite likely impossible as it may be to tone her (and her chair) down.. I think that for the potential of this shot it would really be worth it if you can reduce her impact in the scene ;)
L
ExpresbroParticipantThanks Lorraine…from someone who takes some of the best situation people shots on this forum, I’ll take that as a BIG compliment :D :D
I know that poor girl is a distraction on the scene…..and yeah..you’re right..her chair is worse…so I’ll look at it and see what I can do with it…might get away with just a little affect on the smoke.
Btw..this is actually an outside covered shed thing that they’ve erected at the back of the pub, but the owners decorated it with pub memorabilia stuff to make it a little more homely…so we..er..they ..weren’t breaking the law…honest…
ValentiaMemberI think the man in the foreground really takes away from the portrait of the girl. Maybe you could have asked him to move??
Only joking :D I like this a lot too. A bit of dodging and burning could transform the shot though. Not an easy job I admit but worth it I think.
New Ross and the AIMS choral. Them were the days. Mighty craic. I’ll never forget the climb up the hill to the school to change into the gladrags. I mimed most of the time by the way!!
ExpresbroParticipantJaysus Danny..don’t remind me about that bloody hill… Nearly had a heart attack climbing it.
Okay..did a couple of really quick edits on this one. Need advice on which way to go. Just did these on the Jpeg image I downloaded from my own flikr site.
Fist one is with a fairly severe (I think) selective lens blur applied with a little burning..second is just using the burn tool. Is either of these the way to go?Personally I lean towards the burning rather than the blur..just think it looks more believable. These are fairly quick rough edits..so I’ll spend a bit more time on it when I decide which way to go. It’s not really possible to lose the girl altogether without ruining the whole shot I think..I want to maintain the bar-room atmosphere..so just looking to lessen her impact on the shot:)
ValentiaMemberExpresbroParticipantCouldn’t sleep..overtired…so had a go at removing her completely as per Danny’s edit: Let me know what yis think
AllinthemindParticipantgreat expression, love the smoke :) This will be an archive shot in years to come, someone smoking!
Si
LoGillParticipantExpresbroParticipantTa Lorraine. Do you think the three windows are okay? Was gonna tone them down a lot as in Danny’s edit…but I don’t want to completely change the shot if possible?
