Doesn’t a leaving cert get you into that?
LadderzParticipantyeah but for DIT you need a portfolio, i dont have one yet so i was just wondering about city and guilds cousres some cover portfolio, thanks
thefizzParticipantfreshphotoParticipantgriffith college, would be an excellent choice some fine photographers teaching there in fact one or two of the best in their field in europe, and a great bunch of people, they have produced a lot of fine students over the past couple of years and do a lot of very practical commercial teaching aswell, in other words if ur willing to listen they will tell u how to really face the big bad world.
LadderzParticipantoh wow guys looked it up sounds perfect!!!!! you dont know how much this is appreciated, thank you! :D
Brian_CParticipantI’m doing the C&G Level 2 course, OK it’s in Belfast, but be prepared for a fair bit of work. It’s not just producing a panel of 10 photo’s you’re basically writing a photography book including history, types of camera, explain how to make a film including emulsions and chemicals, filters including lightwaves, colour temp, how a lens works including what causes distortion, flash, digi manipulation, work flow… One particular student’s workbook from last year produced 115 pages. That said it’s a very good course.
Is there any degree foundation courses about?
Have you consider the Amatuer Photography Diploma in Photography at http://www.amateurphotographer.com/spi/
LadderzParticipantheya guys just to update yas, thanks a mil everyone i ended up apply n and getn into stillorgan college, can get a portfolio and city and guilds there whoohoo! :)

Just wondering if anyone knows of any good Correspondence courses
New York Institute of Photography (i think) or similar who advertise is the back of the periodicals.
You could also look at the Open University http://www.open.ac.uk of UK for online / distance courses
StevieParticipantI’m doing a course with the OCA.
http://www.oca-uk.com/Self discipline and motivation can become issues  , but what they offer is of good quality.
The courses carry ‘points’ that can be transferred to other courses, and … blowed if can explain it… but if you read the prospectus you’ll probably see what I mean!Edit – if you a do two courses, one at level 2, you get LRPS (on qualifications, not via panel)
digitalfotomanParticipantSom interesting courses in the Open University website I’ll probably try one or two of them out.
Thanks!
pete4130MemberI went to Stillorgan in about 2001 after I finished college in 2001. I joined the photo club in college and got hooked. I had more fun in Stillorgan in 1 year than I did for 3 years in DIT.
The year I went there was some debacle with C&G, people changed jobs at C&G or something and we ended up not actually doing the C&G course. I found the course to be really good for me. I think it really benefitted me. I did it to get a portfolio together to try to go to DIT. Unfortunately I didn’t get in after my year there. It didn’t dishearten me though, only made me more determined. I think that year several people in my class handed the exact same portfolio into both DIT and DLIAD and got them marked on completly opposite ends of the scale eg. DLIAD gave a girls portfolio 540 points while DIT gave it 67 points which made no sense.
I got in the following year though with ease but was working at that stage and decided to defer and/or reapply the following year, remembering what one of my tutors at stillorgan told us:“Whats more important? Being a photography student or a photogrpaher?”
I’m sure you’ll have a great time there and if the college application doesn’t work out first time remember that it doesn’t take away the fact that you still like to take pictures and will have another chance to apply.
Good luck!
Pete.
