Hi all, need your expert advice yet again!
have my 5Dmk11 with 24-7- but also using canon 70-200 which would be heaviest lens, can you recommend a decent tripod, not too expensive also thinking of investing in reasonable price wide angle lens for 5dmk11 and also use my 500D
appreciate any advice at all
thanks
JonbrendancullenParticipantHi Jon,
I bought a Giotto about 18 months ago – and have had 3 issues with it – including a leg fall off – and the part where the 3 legs join snap off.

I can safely say that this is pure Chinese junk….and will never buy Giotto again.
Jessops, Newry, have agreed to give me a full refund – and after much research – i’m trading up to this one…with a standard pan & tilt head

This version comes in a more expensive carbon fibre version (same spec/dimensions/features) – but i prefered the heavier aluminium version for outdoor landscape use.
As for the wide angle – the 17-40 f/4 is your best choice. At f/8 to f/16 – many reviews can’t tell the difference in quality with the 16-35mm which is over twice the price.
This is “Wide angle” on your full frame – and a nice walkabout lens for the 500D.
If you buy a 10-20 or thereabouts for the 500D – i’m not sure of any that will work on the 5D. The Sigma will not for sure.
I bought the 17-40 2nd hand on eBay from the US for around €450 – and had it shipped as a gift – no duty or VAt. Image quality on my 5Dmkii is stunning.http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=canon+17-40&rt=nc&LH_Auction=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m301
You will more or less have a complete lens selection with the 17-40 – and when all are used on the 500D – will give you that extra 60% reach.
My pennies worth,
brenjonwrightParticipantHi Bren many thanks for the brilliant advice really appreciated, will check out the 17-40 as you recommended and also the mentioned tripod

I bought this one and I have no complaints, for a fairly decent price you can get the whole kit and kaboodle. The pistol grip head is brilliant, it’s really intuative to use and easy to get the angle you wnat quickly. Requires a little explaining in airport security though :D
brendancullenParticipantgetting other legs , a mount etc????
You have the option to get a smaller centre column as a seperate purchase. (to bring the camera closer to the ground)
All you need to decide is what type of head to get (tilt and pan, ball & socket etc).bren

Hi Brendan.
It sounds like you picked up a dud. I’ve been using a Giottos tripod (carbon fibre version) for 3 years now & haven’t had any issues except when trying to find a supplier for a shorter centre column. I’ve used a Cannon 7D with 300mm f2.8L & 600mm f4L on it without any problems. I had problems with a lot lighter load on an aluminimum tripod ( Manfrotto ) & found the tension adjustment wheel on the head was never right no matter how many times I adjusted it. I guess all manufacturers have a proportion of duds which get through quality control.jonwrightParticipantThanks lads for all the advice much appreciated now to talk to my credit union manager!!!
also if anyone’s selling a 17-40 f/4 ??

That’s the one i returned to Jessops after multiple issues – and am now the owner of a Manfrotto 055xProB + Pan&tilt head- cost me €20 more and am very happy with it. Built like a tank.
jonwrightParticipantsorry brendan getting all confused!! my budget for the tripod could just stretch to €170 so any thing out there for around that would be great.
