Even on a very tight budget you should read this before buying support gear.

jonwrightParticipantthanks for that! great info, thou now totally confused as in which tripod to get!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok my heaviest load will be my 5DMK11 with battery grip plus a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens
really need the help as need it for shoot this towards end of next week!!
many thanks yet again
JonThe Fine PrintMember…just to weigh in with yet another opinion.
I’ve been using a Manfrotto #055 (A or B, can’t recall now, the most basic one anyway) since 2001 without anything falling off, warping or breaking. Buy quality and get good results. Biggest camera/lens combo would have been 6-7KG. I either use an Arca-Swiss ballhead (expensvie) or a Manfrotto #115 3-way head (cheap, no quick-release though) and often employ a modified Manfrotto #359 Long Lens Support (w. Mini-clamp instead of Super-clamp).
I’ve hiked with it and have even scuba-dived with this tripod, used it under ice and in trees. The turn-buckle clamps are better than the snap clamps by a long shot by the way.
I’ve sold a Gitzo CF I had for a short time and heavily modified e.g. a Benbo Trekker (read: destroyed) for my needs. The 055 has been ok as-is (although I usu. don’t use the centre column) and is probably my main SLR, view camera (and light docu video) tripod. Can’t recommend a lens as I don’t own a Canon SLR, but my kit would entail a 17-40 I guess, no 24-70 then, but a 50mm f1.4 prime instead.
jonwrightParticipantthanks for that, appreciate the feedback on it, really do, sounds like the biz
pelagicMemberjonwrightParticipantordered a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro at reasonable enough price on Amazon and got a Manfrotto 322RC2 head from Conns by post at decent price too.Heads arrived now just waiting for the legs!!!!!!
Just want to say thanks everyone for the helpful input really do appreciate it
all best
jonpelagicMemberJon, You do realize that we now expect you the produce wonderful images.

re: “what was wrong with the Gitzo”. Nothing per-se, just personal preferences:
a) To me CF is not that attractive, unless you’re really into hiking perhaps and count every gram. I like having weight in a tripod, to get a lower centre of gravity and thus better balance. My camera is often like a sail (e.g. 5×7″ view camera with half a metre of bellows in the breeze). I prefer not having to muck around with weight bags etc. PS: I’ve even walked 35km though tropical, mountainous terrain with the Manfrotto. The tripod was the least of my problems.
b) The twist locks were not that great.Jon: Great, happy shooting!!!!
jonwrightParticipantThanks lads!!! if only the legs would arrive!! sounds like that old ZZTop song lol
and wonderful images, think it’ll take more than the tripod!!!
