Recommend a good compact camera
-
legacydanParticipant
My girlfriend keeps annoying saying she wishes her little Olympus camera would take better pictures like my D90, I thought i would buy here a new compact camera. looking to spend around 300-400 euro max.
I came across the Canon PowerShot S90, which seems like a nice little camera. what would you folks recommend in this price range?
Piotr MMemberCanon g11 is a very nice camera.
I’ve seen once a new fuji f30 for 140 in McCabe’s pharmacy in Swords Pavilions. That is one of the best compacts ever.
You can also buy DSLR. Something like d40 would be much better choice than any compact. Compacts have too many Mpixels. Photos are noisy even at basic iso.
Everything depends on what kind of improvement your girlfriend is expecting.b318ispParticipantBoth the G11 and S90 are fine cameras. The G10 can be got at a good price too – closer to you price range, as it is now superceded. These G series may be a bit too heavy.
That said, I’d strongly recommend the Panasonic LX3. It has very good low light performance, sufficient to scare an SLR. Unless she wants to manipulate the camera, this is probably one of the best pocket types out there.
legacydanParticipanti think even all the ones mentioned would be too big for her and i dont think she would use have the features. she is more of a point and shoot girl and isnt into photography as much as me. So with that taken into account i think the Panasonic Lumix ZS3 is a good choice:

Good all round compact camera that she can fit in her handbag that takes decent enough pictures
PixelleMemberI have the camera mentioned by legacydan.
It fits in my pocket, and is more discreet than my D80. I could use it on holiday where for security reasons I had to leave the D80 behind.
The intelligent auto is quite good. And the zoomable HD video is fun. 12X by the way.
No manual, aperture or shutter controls, but lots of modes.
It has a lithium battery – get a back-up!!There’s a good review here. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q209grouplongzoom/page5.asp” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
BMParticipantA bit out of your price range, but the Panasonic GF1 looks good – with most of the features of a “full” SLR but much smaller

Madra RuaParticipantThe S90 is a fantastic compact camera!
I had looked for the right small camera for me for 2 years and finally bought the S90 last December.
I’m not going anywhere without it anymore.
I can only recommend it.
– Same processor and sensor as the G11
– f2.0 lens (at wide angle)
– very good in low-light
– RAW images
– excellent control system for manual, semimanual shooting with two control wheelsNegativ:
– no optical viewfinder
– no HD videoAlan RossiterParticipantI’d second the LX3. Light and discrete with full Auto for those party nights to full manual and Raw or Raw+Jpeg should you choose to do so. A multitude of settings and effects with video & f2.0. Like Haukes S90 the disadvantage is the fact that it has no viewfinder (the Panasonic viewfinder can be got…but at €190) but it does have an option to adjust the LCD screen to suit ambient light.

waterford45MemberI have atz7 panasonic tz3. its a couple of years old now but has a good optical zoom (10x) and video capability. the current one has 10 mp, 12x zoom and hd video and is available for €275 plus p+p on pixmania.ie. perfect size for handbags etc.,
ugogMemberI would also recommend the s90 (although I believe s95 is also now available) – a great little go anywhere P&S
MarkKeymasterYep S90 would be my recommendation too. I know of another 2 pi members who’d recommend it also.
SeaviewParticipantI bought the Canon S95 after being highly recommended on here, a great little camera but I got a lens error last week after just 6 months. I have returned to the shop and it has to go back to canon. After a brief Google search, I found I’m not the only one to have this problem. A great little camera but buy with care.
Dave.
markst33ParticipantDoes anyone have any experience/opinions on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7. A friend of mine is looking at getting one as his first camera.
