Recommend a lens for sports….

imaginationParticipant
Hi folks..
Any recommendations for sports lenses – I have a kit lens 28-135…. I also have a wide and a nifty 50 but a good sports lens would probably complete my kit – I think :)
I am planning on covering a gaelic match next week and would like to a few nice picts as it is a big deal in our skool…..
Ta :D
BallymanParticipantIf budget is low then a Sigma 70-300mm for <€150 will do the job for you.
imaginationParticipantpaulParticipantFor GAA – 400mm f/2.8, or 300mm f/2.8 or 70-200mm f/2.8 (in that order).
GAA pitches are large, so good reach is important.
Of course, budgets don’t always allow for such good lenses, so I guess the Sigma would be ok.
kensutzParticipantThe 400mm is limiting in GAA terms too. Some use a 500 or even 600mm lens for hurling and football.

I think 3, 4, 5, 6 etc. hundred mm lenses are out the posters price range at the moment I’d imagine!! :D
paulParticipantimaginationParticipantBudget! I tend to hover somewhere in the mid-range – not the cheapest but not the snasiest piece of gear…
I have a 7D so there would be a 1.6 factor. What would a 70-200 be like with a TC… The 70-200 seems to have a number of uses..
Thanks for the replies… :D
paulParticipantI would say that the vast majority of sports photographers would have a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. However, for GAA this would be very short. That might cover the nearest 8th of the pitch to you.
As has been said above, even a 300mm lens is short on a GAA pitch.
But, you have to find something to suit your budget and needs.
imaginationParticipantBallymanParticipantimaginationParticipantTa Ballyman… Match was on last week and I turned up with my 18-135. Was nearly knocked over by an energetic cameraman with a canon 600mm – It made me feel that I had a point and shoot camera
Got some close ups and cropped them down and they weren’t too bad – a tad dark is my only complaint luckily the players were wearing light colours (Monaghan v Dublin)…
