Recommend lens for landscapes (50D)
-
HelenParticipant
I use a Canon 50D and would like to try more landscape work. Just wondering what recommendations or best lens to use for landscape photography.
I have been looking at a good few suggestions online
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM (could this be used for both landscape & portrait)
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM or Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM
Of course am open to suggestions regarding Sigma etc
MMXParticipantIf I should recommend the best lens, it would be Carl Zeiss 18 f/3.5
If you require autofocus, buy EF 14 f/2.8 L
If you want a zoom and consider upgrading to full frame, buy the EF 17-40 f/4 L or EF 16-35 f/2.8 L
If you want a zoom and want to stay with APS-C, buy EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 ISMr TParticipantHi Helen,
Assuming you will be sticking with the 50D for a while, try the canon 10-22mm or the less expensive sigma 10-20.
Either of these will give you good wide angle results. Keep a eye out for second hand versions of these from people upgrading to full frame.
Another alternative is the canon 15-85mm.HelenParticipantThanks for the tips everyone, I am hoping someday :) to upgrade to a 5D MII but it will be a while yet so am taking all the suggestions on board.
Thanks again everyone. (am off to price now :) )
SheldonParticipantLaineyParticipantI have the Tokina 12-24mm and love it – got it second hand in Conns for €400. Found it really useful for a recent wedding I shot – getting the whole group in the frame…
DougLParticipantI would highly recommend the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8. I have one for sale: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=39587
Even if you don’t buy it from me, you should buy it. I had a 30D, which is a little long in the tooth, and I bought this lens rather than upgrade the body. It was the best decision I’ve made, gear wise. The quality of the 17-85 just doesn’t compare.

BrickerParticipantHi,
I bought a second hand Tokina 12-24 off Sheldon about a year ago …. and use it with my 50D. Its a great lens for the price.
At the time I was considering the Sigma 10-20, but was hooked on the Tokina when I took it for a test drive.

PeteMcDMemberUltra-wides are great for landscapes. The Canon 10-22mm is the best in this range for an EF-s mount camera.
The 17-40 f/4 is a better general purpose length, esp if a 5D II is in the forseeable future (it will be an ultra wide on the 5D).
The Canon 17-55 f/2.8 is the best general purpose lens for an EF-s body, but you won’t be able to use it on the 5D.
There’s no perfect solution… but there are a few good solutions…
