Recommended places in Europe for New Years..?

Doing a little holiday planning at the moment, and think this year could finally be the year I have things together in time to arrange a getaway for New Years :)

Nothing booked yet, and wonder if anyone has any recommendations for somewhere cool to spend a week (27/12- 04/01) at that time of year. Paris and Berlin are under consideration, but more from a general fondness of both, rather than knowing what they might be like at that time of year.

Any and all recommendations welcome, and while not a photographic holiday, the cameras will be loaded with film and at the ready nonetheless :)

Interesting recommendation Chris, it’s great to get recommendations off the beaten track, so to speak. I’ve had a number of suggestions from people, and I think it’s going to be a hard decision to make..

If you want a City break and to conciliate your holiday with a bit of photography I would suggest 2 places:

Lisbon – Fantastic cityscapes to be found there, some really nice monuments and lots of history and museums to go to while no shooting. It has a very cool atmosphere on Bairro Alto at night too with the Fado Houses. You might even be able to shoot a few Fado Singers on the houses if you talk to them nicely.
Around Lisbon you have lots of places to go to also for Landscape photography. The Sintra beaches are fantastic, you have Cascais a traditional fishing city on the outskirts and you have Estoril if you’re feeling lucky and want to indulge in the casino. Plenty of nice places to stay too and not that expensive if you know where to look. Capital cities however will always be more expensive than other cities.

Barcelona, well if you haven’t been there, book it now. Its one of the nicest cities I’ve ever visited and I’m bound to return. The Gaudi Architecture is scattered all around the city centre and will give you plenty of places to photograph. The Gothic Cathedral is also a must stop if you want to photograph architecture, its impressive. Barcelona is also a very lively city with cultural events and plenty of museums to occupy your time while not shooting. The night life is superb and second to none. I was there for a long weekend only and didn’t have time to explore the outskirts, but I’m sure that around Barcelona you’ll find also plenty of nice mediterranean beaches that will keep you busy shooting seascapes. The winter is actually in my opinion the best time of the year to shoot them as they won’t be disturbed by the tourists.

Anywhere you go, enjoy your break. ;)

For a PARTY, go to Edinburgh!

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, you’ve surely added a few places to my travel list.

In the end, Berlin was the destination of choice, and am looking forward to celebrating New Years there.

Very good Damien. Berlin is a place I’d love to visit. Has to be good for some street photography.

Might be worthy of a PI event someday :)

    Enjoy

Thanks Mark, looking forward to bringing the cameras with me. A great city, this will be my third time to Berlin, and can highly recommend it. Never been for New Years yet, but Berlin is one of those wild, fun places where you get the impression anything can happen and believe there is a massive street party at the Brandenberg Gate on New Years Eve, in addition to the usual serendipitous living common to Berlin :)

I am quite keen to get to Spain, and probably Barcelona, also for New Years sometime, and it was quite a close call this year. No one seems to celebrate New Years like in Spain, it would seem!

In any case, Berlin is definitely worthy of a PI trip someday, especially when bundled with a day trip to Dresden which just has to be seen to be believed. Very low cost of living in Berlin, and with a group apartment, could be very do-able indeed..

I was in Berlin last Christmas for a few days up until new years, I enjoyed it. It snowed for the two days before new years so the place was nice and white and was nice for pics. Lots to take pictures of worth visiting for sure, bring some fast film for nighttime… Hope you get snow…

Below is a link to a darkroom print of a picture taken in Berlin on new years eve morning last year. I’ll bring it along to the Apug meet Saturday week…

Hi Martin – if you have any must-see’s in Berlin, don’t be shy :) Have been to Berlin twice before, but this will be my first time there at this time of year.

Lovely print by the way, and look forward to seeing it next Saturday should you have it along. I recall a beautiful picturesque and snowy Vienna one November in years past, and snow in Berlin would be nice, although I hope it’s not as cold as that snowy November in Vienna I remember :)
