My respect & admiration for specialist macro photographers increased 100 fold today. I managed to aquire a loan of the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro (non IS version).
I am aware of the decreasing DOF the longer the lens and the closer the subject – but trying to shoot a moving insect, on a moving flower/leaf – with a DOF of approx 0:01mm is really some challenge. It took nearly 100 attempts to get this shot.

Red admiral. Taken at Kilmacurragh Arboretum on 28 Sept 2011.
    Canon 7D & Canon 100mm Macro.
    f/7.1, 1/125, ISO400. (DOF in this instant is 0:01mm) http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

    Well done Brendan.
Lovely colours & nice detail. The composition is also spot on. I also find the blue a bit distracting, but strangely I find that, if the diagonal brighter bit of background on the RHS was cropped out, the blue bit is much less noticable.

Beautiful colours. For a 1st attempt it’s very impressive.I’ve never done any
Macro myself but I do know it’s very, very difficult , so well done

Well done, that is a lovely image, focus is spot on the eye and the complete subject is in the frame. I find that Butterflies are one of the most difficult macro subjects and you have done well here to capture the image as shown……………./Mikka
