Took this yesterday evening, was driving off a mountain track, it was almost black dark and this guy appeared in the headlights, stuck on the Canon 100- 400 IS L and my 580ex speedlite and said i’d have a go for the hell of it, ISO800, f5.6, 1/125sec at 400mm. Only got one shot off. Removed some redeye and shadow in PS and cropped it to portrait, so what do ye think? C&C please.

What a great bit of opportunism. The plumage doesn’t seem to have been flashed out at all – well done. I love their hairy feet.

    John,

Under the circumstances excellent shot. I used to see them on a fairly regular basis at the back of Lough Nahanagan-Turlough Hill and around the Fair Mountain-Lough Firrib area about ten years ago. But I haven’t seen them anywhere else since.

Dont think I have ever seen one, are they the same size as a pheasant? You did well to get a shot at all in the circumstances, nice colour in the feathers and not much evidence of the flash.

    Shutterbug!

ps love that “famous grouse” add too, should be on soon usually Christmas time it appears!

    Thanks folks,
They are one of my favourite birds and i love that Famous Grouse add too :)
Shutterbug–They are a little smaller than a pheasant.
I run a Grouse conservation project in the Wicklow Mountains National Park and there’s a good population in the Wicklow Mountains and in the Slieve Blooms.
MJ–They are still in the places you mentioned.
I took Mike Brown out this year to get a Grouse photo for his new book, he got a lovely shot and it looks great in the book, wish i could get a shot as good for myself.

    John,

I recently got the Mike Brown book and the red grouse shot is I feel one of the best in the book.
