Extremely tough little critters to shoot. There’s the white fur contrasting with the dark underside. They rarely give you a clear shot of their face. It wasn’t helped by the weather… nothing you can do there.
I try to close in on their faces. This is a little more possible with these guys because you can get close to them. This counters the contrasting colouring and the blown out sky effect. You did the right thing here by metering for the Panda. There’s no way you could have gotten and attractive background sky in these conditions.
I make it sound easy but it’s not. I’ve never gotten a clear face shot of them. Came close once but just missed it. I’ve only one keeper shot of all my attempts with them. I certainly haven’t gotten close to a shot of one of them eating. More often it’s a brief snap while they quickly look around before getting back to a hard day’s sleep.
I don’t know if I like the border and the leaf effect. I think I might have cropped those leaves on the top and cloned out any stray remnants floating in from the top.
Liek I said… tough to shoot but just they’re just so doggone cute.
earthairfireParticipantWas this more the kinda shot you meant?
So miffed at the pea souper sky and low light…. BAH!

joe_elwayParticipantThat’s closer. Might have tried a portrait style on this one… less white background and tried to get the ears. But that’s just me. I think 90% of my animal stuff is portrait aspect.
There’s sweet F.A. you could do about the sky. If we were pros who sat there for 3 months then I’d criticise. I’m in no position to blast anyone :-)
earthairfireParticipantThanks Aidan,
Nice to get feedback from someone that’s tried to get the same shot and knows the challenges faced!
