Red squirrel
Image taken in Emo Court, hopefully I’ll soon figure out how to upload,

steelydanParticipantHere you go
Nice and sharp, but the black shadow in the foreground is drawing my eye to it.
Paul WhParticipantHi John, thanks for putting that up for me, where did I go wrong ?, the black shadow in the front is holly leaves, this was taken on a 24-105 lens so he’s right beside me, I’ve 100’s more but I know a few have that bit of holly scrub in the front, sorry don’t believe in cloning out stuff, thanks for the comment. Paul :D
shutterbugParticipantvoicuParticipantmy view is that if you believe in showering, shaving, nice clean shirt before you go out, you should believe in enhancing your photo in post processing. enough said, everybody is different and that is my view. its’ a nice photo though, and it’s great to see a red one as all my photos with squirrels are with the grey one.
Paul WhParticipantHi guys thanks for the comments, I’ve been a member of PI a long time and to be honest I’ve never bothered to put up an image because I wonder if some photographers are able to just look at a image without coming back with comments about cloning this out and HDR that and all of that type of thing, maybe the people behind PI should think of an area for photographers to view and enjoy a captured moment in time, a section outside of the photo critique box, I do not want my images critiqued I would like to think that the odd time someone might enjoy what they see. When I take a photograph I try and capture “a moment in time”, why should a person waste time trying to “create a sterile image”, that wouldn’t be the moment in time I witnessed, my opinion only.
brendancullenParticipantHi Paul – PI is all about opinions – and your opinion is as valid as every other member.
I feel PI is a great resource – not only for the critique forum – but so many other sub forums too (Items for sale, competitions, members announcements etc). When we submit to the ‘photo critque’ forums – we hope and expect for honest opinion. If i want to placidly upload and/or look at photos i go to Flickr – which is so much more user friendly for ‘viewing’. Another irish site is http://www.pix.ie – but not good as good.
You could also add images – and ask that no opinions be offered maybe.bren
PadraigParticipantPaul WhParticipantHi Brendan, Iset up a flicker a/c just to post an image here (paulwhiteley2011) but I’ve never thought anything of flicker and even less of pix.ie or boards.ie the main site I use is apug, I like that there is a general gallery where you can only put up general comments and also a critique section if you want to post into that then you get critque. I like this site but I mainly read the film post section hence I only process my images in a way that could be only done in a dark room, hence no cloning.
Hi Padraig, thanks for your comments, I like you have the mistress of a project, your project is badgers which you’re doing justice too, some cracker shots that my hat has to be tipped too, great stuff, please keep it up. My mistress is the red squirrel, for over twelve months now I’ve been feeding a small group in a corner of emo forest, they are in all parts of it but I’ve a little patch that I’m busy in. throughout the winter these guys were taken care of and they got a visit even on Christmas day but in return I’ve images of red squirrels in the snow and doing what they do best. When I’m there they are aware of me, do not mind flash and are very relaxed. I’ll put up images on flicker later of these guys in the snow, pretty special stuff, it’s all about fieldcraft and less about processing when you get this close to your subject, I know you understand what I mean, Paul.
Noely FParticipantI’m sitting on the fence in this argument, each to their own :D Great to see Reds, used to be abundant in my local haunts but now very scarce.
Killarney is a good spot for them but every time I’m in the National Park there are more and more Greys.Paul WhParticipantHi Noel, the basic argument here is not about squirrels red or white it’s more about putting up images in a general section instead of a critque section, everything here on pi is critqued, that’s it in a nutshell, I don’t want to be critqued, not that I’d class myself as a good photographer I’m only average but I do excell at fieldcraft which can’t be measured in pixels.
MartinParticipantI dont really post pictures anymore myself. Not really interested in critique and all that zzzzzzz. I just post my pictures to Flickr these days to let people I know or have met over the web know what I am up to and see what they are up to….
To see a pictures properly to “critique” them I think you have to see the picture in person i.e. in print. I reckon most people that visit this site dont even have their monitors calibrated so were all looking after different levels of shadow detail and saturation anyhow so allot of the critique is nonsense. It can be of some help for suggestions around cropping though i suppose…
I like Apugs gallery section also in that there is a critique section and a non critique section. Having a pictures for non critique forum on PI might be good, there are plenty of other groups on PI that get little or no posts these days so might be worth removing one or two of them and making room for a new non critique section…
Over & Out
MPadraigParticipantI’d love to see those red pics, Paul. There are still a few reds around here but its all greys in the woods where I photograph the badgers. Thought of trying to photograph them but they don’t hold the same interest for me as the Red. With wildlife photography knowledge and fieldcraft is more than half the battle. Keep it up.
connieParticipantLove the sparkle in his/her eyes. I too would love to see some more red squirrel pics Paul. I have yet to see any in real life in my adult time.
As for the critique or not to critique… I definately think a separate sub forum for pics just to enjoy would be a great idea. I have learned alot from this forum and the mostly “gentle” critique that is passed around. Without the honest comments from you guys I would not have improved as much as I have to date.Paul WhParticipantHi Connie & Padraig why not try this link to flicker or copy and paste it, I uploaded 30 images with another 30 ready to go soon, http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulwhiteley/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; your right about the grey, it’s very hard to take a photograph of them and for them to have the same appeal, maybe the reds just look more at home, my next project is to work in B&W and try using the texture of say scots pine bark to add interest, maybe a little sepia toning and hopefully hey presto, of course it’s never that easy. Your right Connie about critique helping someone along but as you can see from the image I put up it was taken on a 100mm macro with ring flash, the squirrel was 5/6 feet away so the distraction of something on the bottom doesn’t matter to me and isn’t important at all, fieldcraft was everything. Martin is right about lots of the forums barely being used so perhaps something might just happen, come on PI
