resizing for printing

I have an image thats currently 3888 x 3592 pixels in size, with a resolution of 72pixels per inch ( so photoshop tells me anyway).
I want to resize it to fit A4 for printing. whats the best way to resize this for printing so that it fits the constraints best and is of best posible quality/resolution ( i hope those words are interchangeable in this instance)?

depends on the printer your using

but a lot of them use 300ppi as a standard (epson use 360ppi)

if you go into image size in PS and make sure constrain proportions is checked, then change the ppi to 300 or 360, you should get an image around a4 as default

Regarding the printer im using, im not sure, il either be bringing them to some local printers close to work or sending them off.

i also had a photograph that i wanted to print for someone, but when i went to have it printed i was told that it would loose the quality if i printed it above 10×12, which was way too small for what we wanted (friend wanted to frame this print and hang).

i am using a canon 400d, and take all my pictures on the highest quality setting. im afraid i dont use photoshop or anything like that, am pretty much a beginner and not at all technical. i just about manage picasa for basic fixes. :?

how can i be sure in future that my photographs are of a good enough quality to print.

from a 400d you should easily be able to print 16*12 or even 20*16

it does mean scaling the image up but if its done right it will look great

Hi Angela. I recently got a print done at 20×16 from a Fujifilm E900 point & shoot camera in which the print quality was perfect. This camera is 9 megapixel and as the 400D is over 10 megapixel, I’m sure that if the image is not severely cropped and is clear of camerashake and well exposed, it should print fine to this size and more.

The problem as I see it, is not that you don’t have enough resolution (120ppi will generally give you a good print) but that the shape/aspect ration of your image will not print full frame at A4. Your image is nearly square.
I would set my crop tool to 8″x12″ (Nearest to A4 as Minilabs use 6″,8″,10″,12″ rolls) with dpi left blank and over-crop my image giving extra area to the longer sides so that it has an 8″x12″ aspect ratio. It will of course have white (or what ever colour you chose) at either end of the print. However the next problem is that if you are framing your image it will not now fit a standard frame.

With regard to resolutions, Fuji minilab prints are generally output at 300dpi, Kodak LED 250dpi and Epson printers start at 180dpi so depending on where you are getting them printed will depend on what resolution you should use. However I would also suggest that you avoid interpolating your file up as this is generally best done by the printers software.

    Hope this helps.

firstly fquihen, sorry i should have apologised for highjacking onto your post!!

stcstc, thank you, but what does scaling the image up mean?? is that something i do myself, or is it done by the printer (yes, i did say a beginner, lol)

miki, thank you, think it might i might have cropped it a bit, but not too much. think i might get one or two done that dont need cropping just to see how they turn out.

    thanks guys

    there are lots of variables

but basically, in photoshop you can adjust the resolution of the file

is it possible to re-size to 10×8 with out losing the aspect ratio

No. The aspect ratio of the 40d is 12×8
