Reverse ND Grads
-
nfl-fanParticipant
Fintan,
I already have some standard Lee ND Grads.
The thing with standard grads is that whilst they’ll darken down the sunrise/sunset strip just above the horizon they also darken down the sky that sits above this strip. The sky above is already significantly darker than sunrise/sunset strip that you want to tone done so doesn’t really require the full effect of the filter.
A reverse ND grad will apply less filtration to the area above the bright sunrise/set strip.
Look at how dark the top 1/5th of this image is… it shouldn’t be so dark but the 5 stops of standard grad I was applying to the sunset also darkened down the sky that sat above it.
PeteWMemberBut would a reverse grad in this case not have an adverse effect on the lighthouse which is one of the key elements in this shot ?
nfl-fanParticipantPete, I don’t want to sound rude but… I’m really not bothered debating this to be honest. Feel free to further your discussion in General Photography Q&A if you so choose.
If you know where to buy them in Europe then please enlighten us, otherwise…
My gut feeling is they can only be purchased in the US.
jb7ParticipantFintanParticipantI see your problem, its not a problem I’ve encountered, I like darkened skies luckily. And yes USA or Canada it seems unfortunatly
I sent off an email to Lee Filters about it, I’ll post if I get a reply.

How about using two gradual filters, and reversing one?
now can you explain how?
seems to be a concept too big for my brain..jb7ParticipantUse 2 grads,
put the lighter one upside down,
where the two cross will have greater density…jb7Participantjb7ParticipantGizzoParticipantmmmm I think that the dark edge will result in a very strait line across the picture…
this solution is already causing problems to my brain :Djb7Participantnfl-fanParticipantSorry… you’re too fast. I erased.
I was saying that that your suggestion might not work because the physical filter edge would cross the image and might get messy. I’m use the 100mm filters and I don’t think that this size would suffice.
Thanks for that Fintan, sure let us know.
Thanks everyone.
jb7ParticipantIf I had grads I’d try it, before dismissing it-
but my interests lie elsewhere…Just had a 120 year old Suter Aplanat delivered-
I’m just so excited…GizzoParticipantjb7 wrote:

jb7ParticipantWell, I can’t talk for your bad cameras,
but I can’t really say until I test it…Sorry nfl, shouldn’t really be talking about it here,
but I just couldn’t contain myself, had to tell somebody…Stop now-
