Ricoh GR-D Cameras ?

Its been a long time since I’ve had a proper, pocketable camera, and find myself considering the Ricoh GR-D range more and more, especially with some of the glowing user experience reports from users.

I wonder if any posters here have any experience with the range, or perhaps have an opinion to contribute. Obviously I’m aware of the 28mm prime lens, which I like the idea of as I like primes, but think twice about sometimes as its a bit wider than I’m used to shooting with.

That said, I’m experiencing quite a bit of photo-block at the moment, and the idea of something new’ish that may jar me out of it, is appealing.

I’ve thought of other compact pocketable cameras too, such as the Canon S90/ 95/ 100, and as much as they appeal, the prospect of limited high iso, as I shoot indoors and in poor light a bit, is not so appealing. I know the Ricoh may be similar in this regard, but it seems users are squeezing iso 800 & 1600 out of the little cams without too much trouble.

    Feedback and thoughts welcome..

    Hi Damien,
Don’t know much about the Ricoh, but have you considered the Fuji’s?
The x100, while not being very small, can still fit in a jacket pocket. It’s got a super 35mm (equiv) f2 fixed lens, and is excellent in low light.
    The hybrid viewfinder is brilliant.
Although I’ve only got the x10 a short time, I’m finding it very good also.
It’s got a manually zoomed 27mm – 110mm equivalent (or something around that anyway) f2-f2.8 lens.
Both these cameras are very well made, metal cameras, and are well worth a look.
However, you might also be interested in the upcoming Fuji x-1Pro.
This looks like it’s going to be a must have (for me anyway)
It’ll be something simular to the x100, but will have interchangable lenses, and there may even be an adaptor to attach leica m mount lenses to it. It’s supposed to be coming out Feb or March and if the specs are to be believed, it’s going to blow everything else out of the water.
If you haven’t done so already, pick up an x100 and have a look through the viewfinder.
It’ll blow away that photo block, and make you want to start taking pictures the moment you lift it up to your eye!

Yes, there seems to be an awful lot of options out there at the moment, from the S95 sized cameras to the panasonic and olympus micro 4/3’s bodies. There really is a lot of choice now for those of us wanting smaller cameras we do not have to wrestle with to take images, it seems.

I like the look of the Fuji cameras, the X100, X10 and the new interchangeable lens camera. For now, I would like some sort of go anywhere camera, as I have not bought a camera since I started this thread, and something like the S95 looks perfect for that purpose. The aforementioned Ricoh GR-D, Panasonic LX-3’s and LX-5’s look good too, as well as the panasonic and olympus micro 4/3’s bodies.
