If you have a speedlight then you could get an attachment for it, it fits
over the flash so uses the light from that, I dont know how good they are
as I havent used one, but I do know that they are fairly reasonably priced.
    Have a look on ebay.

Hey Jon, this is what I was meaning…. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/O-Flash-160-Ring-Flash-Light-Canon-580EX-580EX-II-350D-400D-450D-1000D-/130751975409?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraFlashUnits_JN&hash=item1e716ccff1#ht_2660wt_1186″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; have no experience of them so would suggest a bit of investigation into them. Very inexpensive as opposed to about 300.00 euro for a dedicated ring flash.

I always think there’s something creepy about ring flash catchlights in a model’s eyes. Rectangular catchlights look more normal to me.

One of the sites sponsors has that ‘http://seamlessphoto.com/o-flash.html’ although it doesn’t say anything about the 580ex11… AND they are cheaper too!! :P :P

I agree with the above comment. The circular catchlights look weird in a models eyes, even though the even lighting from a ringflash can look great. Would you not try using a second flash to try get the even lighting? Nissin do cheap alternatives to Canon.

I know that Barker Photographic do ring flash attachments, ie you attach to your existing flash.

I have an alternative for you, its not perfect but its cheaper then a ring flash.

    Ring 48 Macro LED
Im just using this link because I got a friend in the states to post it to me so we avoided any import duties :)

Now before anyone bites my head off just let me say, I read about this a while back and from what I read, the downsides are mainly the limited range and controls and how harsh the light can be, BUT, its affordable and can use battery and mains power, the harsh light can be reduced to if your inventive, and no money is the mother of invention. I picked one up mainly out of curiosity and gave it a try, Im mainly using it while Im working on macro photography and Ive managed to reduce the harshness of the light by carefully wrapping tissue paper around the LED area itself. It takes some work but it drastically reduces the glare and harshness of the lighting.

With some poking and prodding its possible to make this wee thing pretty amazing. It wont be pretty and you wont look like a pro but it’ll get you some work, save you some money and you’ll be able to get some good results.

While you cant do better then an actual flash ring this might be a nice alternative for you til you have the money to get yourself something decent.

Piece of advise, use AP mode along with it, it’ll work far better that way.

Hope that helps you a little.
