Rings in the Sky??

Hi – can someone please tell me why on so many of my landscape photos I can see what appears to be kind of rings/circles in the sky? – only ever see it in the sky. Is it something to do with my lens or exposure or what? More to the point – can I get rid of them in post processing as anything I’ve tried to do seems to actually make them more noticable. Any ideas? :?

Hi KerryAnne – the issue is called “banding”.

heres a link to an earlier post worth reading.

You can also google it – what causes it – and how to eliminate it.

hey, do these rings/banding appear before you do any post processing? they are normally the result of excessive manipulation esp colour

    stew:)

Hi guys thanks for the info, the rings mostly appear at the post-processing stage so maybe I’m being a bit heavy with CS5. On a few occasions I can see them on the original photo also but only very slightly but CS5 definitely seems to accentuate them – or should I say “my use” of CS5 accentuates them! I have seen “De-banding” as an options in one of the Topaz plug-ins so maybe I’ll try running that as I wasn’t sure what it was. Thanks alot for the advice guys – much appreciated! :)

More than likely a banding issue… common problem, see link above from “brendancullen”

in a nut shell change your camera settings to create 16bit files and in PS or what ever editing tool your working in use 16 bit also…. problem is that your more than likely working in 8 bit….
