Rita in the garden…

Very nice portrait, Rob.
My only suggestion is maybe a slight crop from the top and from the right to eliminate/hide the out-of-focus ‘bars’ which take form it a bit.Regards.
miki gParticipantHi Rob. I would agree about cropping,or maybe cloning, especially above her head. Nice portrait though.
johnnymcParticipantHi Rob,
Well done on a lovely portrait. I would agree that a small crop to the top might balance it a bit better (for me). It’s a strong engaging shot though, lovely and sharp with a nice b/w conversion.
Well done,
John
jessthespringerParticipantVery nice Rob, great eye contact, and lovely expression.
I think I might like it with a little bit off the top too, and maybe just a wee tad brighter.Sinead
osheadParticipantI like this shot Rob. Very good eye contact with the camera. I don’t like her smile. Looks like she’s trying to keep her mouth closed while smiling.

LoGillParticipantagreed on the crop/ clone
*Slaps your hands for not noticing the pole type thingy* ;)
Other comment – make a mask and selectively use levels to brighten rita’s face – at the moment the shirt is the brightest point – (you might know better ways to do it but you know what I mean)
Rita’s expression in this is wonderful – so soft and engaging and she seems about to burst laughing !!
I love it
L
jb7ParticipantYes Rob, looks good to me-
though I won’t slap your wrist, as you’re probably still smarting from Lorraine’s-And yes, what she said about the mask thing too-
I do think that drain thing has got to go though…
shouldn’t be very difficult-RobMemberThank you one and all, and my wrist is smarting, deservedly so, from the slap.
How terribly remiss of me to leave that pole thingy (trampoline upright support)
growing from my beloved’s crown…Because of the windblown hair, cloning would be tiresome and most likely
noticeable, so a crop would definitely improve matters here…Lorraine, with regard to the skin tone being a little dark, I have lightened it, but only very
very slightly as any lighter looks completely unnatural. Rita’s skin is quite a bit
darker than mine, especially in the Summer months, and the white jacket has accentuated
that to some extent. See what you think of this edit…Incidentally, this is just one photograph of Rita out of many hundreds that she actually
likes herself…LoGillParticipantthere is alot to like – much prefer the edit !!
*Pats you on the back* ;)

nkeeganParticipantNossieParticipantRob don’t hate me for this but I think the picture is for the bin. I’m not willing to blow hot air up your ass for the sake of being nice. For that matter I’m not intentionally mean either.
Women globally spend billions on cosmetics to enhance their looks. Do you think you’ve done that here? Have you captured her looking fabalicious? Is her expression a story telling look? Her hair, jewelry, composure, where’s it at?
It’s a clear sharp shot. Ok. Any P+S will do that for you.
Has she (I don’t know her name) seen the photo? What is/was her reaction? “Oh my god, delete that!”?Would you send this photo into a glossy magazine and hope for it to be printed? Would you make it a 4foot canvas and hang it on your wall with pride?
She looks uncomfortable and just about to talk which knocks her jaw offside/jolted. It looks like you caught her at a bad time. Personally I’d have left it out or else got her into it depending on the vibe.
Sorry for being harsh but there are millions of pointless shots taken coz it’s free. Go back and allow her to fix herself/hair etc. Compose the shot, settle and the shoot. Look through the lens like it’s a printed finished copy, look about and into the corners, is all ready for printing before you push the button?
This isn’t a slant opinion of the woman by no means, I say this coz I think she’s close to you, it’s just my observation of the shot. I don’t think you did her any favours.
If your going for au-natural and all that well then I can’t be arsed. I want her to feel and be delighted when you hand her a print.
Consider it in good faith. Would you make a 4foot print of this and hang it on your wall? Would you be pleased with the result?
thats my 2cents and I’ll suddup now.

Interesting critique Ray !!
I found it difficult to understand what you are trying to say at points – but its seems pretty much that “get her to brush her hair and smile” is the general slant. In technical photographic terms you have no critique – its all purely about your preference for the subjects presentation and the end photo “polish” tthat you expect
I’ve looked on the site here for an example of the type of image you think this should be – so I can get a better understanding of where you are coming from with your “feedback” – but actually, I can’t see that you have ever posted a photo for critique on Photography Ireland – In fairness to you though I got fed up looking after 4 pages of general oppinion on everything .. so then I went to your website to have a look .. anticipation levels very high, ready to be inspired.
 … I’m STILL looking …
L
RobMemberDear Nossie, or may I call you Ray…
No I don’t hate you, and no, I don’t think you’re mean. Thank you for your
indepth critique of my wife. I was of course looking for a critique of the photograph,
but hey, what do I know….When I first read your vile and pointless diatribe I was wont to dismiss it offhand.
I’m just that sort of guy. Then I thought, “phuck that! Who is this idiot?”…Time to reassess…

Is her expression a story telling look? Her hair, jewelry, composure, where’s it at?Right, so obviously not a diplomat…
Has she (I don’t know her name) seen the photo?
Hmm, I thought the title ‘Rita in the garden’ might be a bit of a hint.
So, definitely not a detective……looking fabalicious? …Is her expression a story telling look?
…If your going for au-natural and all that well then I can’t be arsed.
…thats my 2cents and I’ll suddup now.As for the education angle? Neither a grammarian nor an orthographer…
I was puzzled. When I first read your post I had assumed you were just
an arse. So I clicked on your profile only to discover that you are in fact
a photographer. Imagine that. Me too…Not content with that I decided to investigate further, so I ventured a little
farther South and clicked on the link that brought me to your little website…Thankfully, I’m pleased to say that I can still trust my instincts. You are, as
I initially suspected, just an arse…A handful of good people from this site have met Rita in person, and I’m certain
most of them would agree that this is a pretty good representation of how she
looks in person. A pleasant Summer afternoon, just enough of a breeze to tousle
her hair. It may not be a toothy grin, but it is a charming smile nonetheless,
and one which I have the pleasure of enjoying most days. I could of course pound
away those laughter lines and small creases with my Photoshop hammer, but it
might not look like my wife anymore; I reserve that treatment for those that
request it of me – models, actors, actresses and teenagers with the belief that
beauty really is just skin deep…Unlike LoGill, I’m no longer looking. I looked for quite long enough and I couldn’t
find anything to inspire me at all. You may indeed be a photographer, but only in
the sense that you have a camera and know which button to press to capture an
image. To me however, you will always be an arse…Yours most sincerely,
Rob, Photographer.
NossieParticipantRob & LoGill the pair of yis lost me completely. Rob at no point did I criticise your wife I just looked at a picture and I thought the point of you posting it to a photography site is for other photographers to comment on it. I wouldn’t have said anything if it was posted on facebook or myspace or something like that coz then it’s just a family/friends photo but here it’s up for discussion. Anyway the worst I wrote is that she looks uncomfortable. LoGill wrote it looks like she’s about to burst out laughing. So obviously then you are just looking for agreeable people to comment. Grand, maybe you could ad this to your signature, something like “only comment if you like me, my wife and my work and you love hot air”. Just to be clear what was your point of posting the picture here? Showing off your wife or a picture? If it’s your wife then I’m not interested, I don’t come to a photo forum to look at family photos. A general rule of internet would be don’t post pictures of your loved ones in case someone slates them (unwittingly or otherwise). Especially if you’re so very thin skinned.
I’ll just call it like I see and you can stick with the rose coloured glasses if ya like. Have as many tantrums as you like and do all the name calling you want, not you nor loGill will be writing the comments for me. You put the picture up there so you take responsibility for it. When people tell you like it is then show some appreciation for their opinion whether you agree with it or not.
What I do notice about the 2 of you though is your need to be vindictive and spiteful, going checking my posts, website etc to find any angle to stick a dagger in. It’s childish and I can’t be bothered. Only out of respect to you have I bothered to answer this, otherwise it’s just not productive.
As for the romantic “just enough of a breeze to tousle her hair”, loGill wrote “”get her to brush her hair and smile” is the general slant” as she tried to put the words in my mouth but that’s grand coz you’re pallywally so when she writes it it’s ok because I’m the villan for taking my precious time to help you with your photography.
So while you’re reminiscing about fine moments of summer days and enjoying that warm fuzzy feeling inside as you look lovingly at your wife the rest of us people “good or otherwise” don’t have those memories to associate with the picture. What’s left for me is just a head shot. Now get over it. It’s a comment on a single shot and has nothing to do with your wife. Don’t be so damn touchy.
Once you think she looks great then good for you Rob. Enjoy.

Well looking at this lousy image of your beautiful wife, I’d say your projecting.
