Rita in the garden…

Rob, me old mate with the big number under his name-
how’s me old palsy walsy?I see you’ve been hanging out here less and less,
can’t say I blame you-Just to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your last post-
though obviously, it might have been better if you hadn’t been put in the position of having to make it.I was recently admonished for asking to see some pictures from another one post member
who openly scoffed at the proven techniques of some respected photographers here.
I don’t think it’s too much to ask that somebody who sets out to be so massively opinionated should put up or shut up-
as Lorraine mentioned, no pictures have been posted for critique.Arse has been mentioned quite a bit, and rightly so-
nossie used it in his first post here, with an ‘up yours’ to nfl-
Now he’s blowing smoke up yours-
is it a bit of an obsession?
or is it just a chat up line, do you think?
The only pictures he’s linked to here have been ones of ritual humiliation- the stripper ones-
which he also found to be quite entertaining. So I think you can see what gets him off-
I’ve done my share of large canvases, as well as prints on paper-
bigger than those mentioned here.
Perhaps some egos only see themselves presented large,
but to me, the idea of a random portrait presented here in the people section
being criticized for being unsuitable to print at four feet high is the most risible piece of ‘critique’ I’ve ever seen on the site. Can’t wait for the charm offensive to continue-

PeteTheBlokeMemberLooks like Nossie has tweaked the beards of the top 3 posters on the site.
Not bad for someone who joined less than a week ago. No one can call
him a coward.Anyway, enough critique of critique (almost enough, anyway). I like the
edited version Rob, and I’m impressed by the sharpness where it counts.
The out of focus bits are just as they should be. Nice one.nfl-fanParticipantI don’t have a beard… but if I did I wouldn’t mind having it tweaked, as long as I’m not the first to tweak and I can tweak back.
I’m still wondering if knobbie is for real… reminds me a bit of the Mainman… what a way with words.
No one can call him a coward.
Agreed… besides it seems like we’ve all more or less agreed that we’re going to run with ‘arse’.

yup !
stcstcMemberok ok step away nothing to see here
jeez we leave you all alone to play nicely for a while and ya start a bloody cat fight, he he
As for the image, rob i quite like it, i kind of understand what nossie was saying, in that its not the norm, seems to be the fashion to have soft ultra polished images of women at them moment
and logill, u saying you not got a beard then he he
NossieParticipantYeah Ok I’ll bite.

Tell it to Simon Cowell I suppose. “So Simon why can’t you sing like the stars on your show? Surely if you can’t sing then you can’t judge others.” He’s heard this little whining cheap shot approach a million times I’m sure.
I personally don’t put pictures up for critique because mostly I don’t really care what other people think unless they’re paying me to work for them. What good would it do me to read LoGill going on about masks and levels. I can look at a picture and decide myself if I like it or not but I can’t do it for a client so why would you do it for me?
Example, take a set of 36 pictures of a child in various poses and pick out the best one. Now show them to the mother and what’s the chances she’ll pick out the same one? Very low. Why coz she see’s something in her child that isn’t obscured by technical hoohaamumbojumbo. What would you do? Stand there and protest “no madam, you don’t take pictures therefore you don’t know what your talking about and how dare you….”. Looks like you might. I ‘d suggest you don’t but there might be more uproar.I certainly wouldn’t want the opinion of the obvious few in this thread since you clearly can’t get past your egos. As I can see here though there is a section for the old boys club of back patters and as such the pictures are clearly suffering.
“Oh hello old chap, I see you’ve got more than 5000 posts, here’s a pat on the back and by default all your work is now good, ladies with jolted jaws and poles coming out of their heads included, don’t mind us if we throw in some jargon like ‘crop’ and ‘mask’ it’s just knob talk to sound like we’re ahead of the small posters.” It’s gotten so bad for the top posters in here that we’re working for nixers and being compared to plasterers, right nfl-fan? Now there’s an honest comment in the mix and it’s all how dare he criticise one of my photos! To warrant my comments I can tell you I’ve taken pictures of a couple of thousand women of all ages. All women have insecurities about how they look – ALL OF THEM. And a few things come out again and again.
Now airbrush that won’t ya?
Cover the fat on my arms
Remove my double chin
Remove the bags under my eyes
Make me slimmer
My legs are too skinny
Make my skin look better
No I don’t like my pose
No I don’t like how I look
No I don’t like my teeth
No look at my feet
No look at my mad freckle
Fix my hair
…and the list goes on.
Add to that my own requirement to make her look feminine, elegant and graceful to show off the delicate woman inside.Take a picture of 2 women and see what happens, I don’t like that one take another, then the other woman isn’t happy. Now try it with a mixed group of women and it takes an hour for one photo. And of course I’m not talking about models that can easily be twisted into shape but regular working girl type women.
The picture that is posted in this thread is not flattering to her. If she tells you it is then either A; your other work is so awful that this looks good; or B; she’s lying. (women do that to keep their men happy). She looks like she’s about to speak and in my opinion it doesn’t work. It’s not about smiling or not smiling. It’s not even about the pole coming out behind her head (that you never noticed but the guy the pointed it out to you got under the ego radar, boys club member?). For me it’s how her chin and lips have tightened up to speak. If that’s not what’s happening then that’s how it looks to me. Also there is nothing else in the photo. There is no story. The caption “Rita in the Garden” could be “Rita in the Airport/Bathroom/Tyre shop”. “Rita chewing on a fizzy cola bottle” might be better.
But this thread isn’t about the photo, it’s about pandering to egos. I wandered in here unwittingly and now look at the bird feathers and dust flying everywhere. Everyone reaching for the daggers in there socks.
More cheap shots, name calling and school yard tactics from the top strutting posters. (lol) I can understand the chap thinking I was having a go at his wife and getting into a fluster but now it’s all ego and it’s really making me laugh. Quick make a circle with the wagons! ffs.So make an honest comment on a fella’s photo and suffer the name calling. Watch them try to pick the bones out of your words and make them sound out of context. Watch them try to be intellectual and sophisticated in the words they use. A shallow load of Bovine Excrement if you ask me.
No worries lads. I won’t comment anymore on the elite.
I signed up to PI to get some Irish opinions on a potential legal situation. (funny how you knowitalls where so quiet and useless then). I saw a few beginners questions elsewhere and decided to help out (give something back). That I’m happy to find is appreciated.
If I’m sorry for anything it’s for Rita’s name being in the middle of it all. The rest of you can take it on the chin and live and learn.
stcstcMemberok enough already
this is outside of the rules,
nossie, there is being blunt and being what comes across as unpleasant
so this ends now, no more
giving honest critque works well, but
and example of going to far with comments is
suggesting a title like “rita chewing on a fizzy cola bottle”
there was no need for that, its not just honest its not needed.
if you cant see the difference between suggesting things are wrong with a picture and coming across as someone suggest “as and arse” then dont comment at all
this is not a democracy its a dictatorship, he he so what me and mark says goes
ps. enough already, play nicey everyone else i will get the big stick out he he
jessthespringerParticipantGosh Nossie, you seem to know a lot about what women think, you must be very popular with them?
Frankly, some of your comments about how you perceive, how women perceive themselves are nothing short of derogatory.Still, I’m sure those women you speak of are delighted with seeing themselves on a heart shaped jigsaw.
Now, that is flattering.Alan RossiterParticipantWell I didn’t comment on Rita so I feel I can freely speak without being one of the “old chaps”?
Raymond, your initial introduction thread to this insert has been pockmarked with condescending and arrogant replies. NFL – well, he can take it. But Steelydan gave you advice on clamps and you as much as told him to feck off and get back in his box. Your initial comments on this thread were also of an arrogant nature.
While all advice is welcome even some where it goes against what the photographer may be trying to achieve most of us try to do so in a mannerly way. Perhaps rather than trying to upset the apple cart you could try to understand why this site is successful (plenty of members, you’ll see). If it isn’t for you, well…
Alan.
stcstcMemberLAST WARNING
comment on the picture only, else the stick will come out!!!!
kenhParticipantok, just the picture then…
stunning looking subject
technically very good
BUT, overall result – drab – i’m sure colour and slightly warmer light would hugely add to the portrait.jb7ParticipantAbout the picture Rob-
In a way it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks,
though I feel disappointed that Rita had to be caught up in the middle of this-I’d tend to disregard any and all advice given by aggressive boors with an avowed interest in playing to the alleged insecurities of women-
A photograph is a valuable record of a moment in time,
and the meaning of it can go far beyond what might be apparent to the casual, or not so casual observer.
Who is to say what preceded or succeeded this moment shared between a man and wife,
and how it should be remembered by those involved?
Is the test of every picture a four foot high print?
In the case of a portrait, it’s a particularly tasteless scale,
unless it is to go on a billboard poster-
but we could all do with a lesson in taste, couldn’t we?Although for some people, it would be like trying to teach a pig to sing Nick Cave’s third album…
I think this one should be printed at a scale that might sit well on top of your piano.
All the more so, now that it’s achieved a level of notoriety-Enjoy it Rob, and Rita too-

photographic critique, or just the usual patronising crap? – Agree with me or be called names?
PLEASE bring in the big stick Steve!
RobMemberOh dear…
Where did it all go wrong?
Firstly, thanks to those who did actually offer constructive criticism of
the image; it was careless of me to leave the trampoline upright visible in
the first instance, a mistake quickly rectified with edit posted afterwards…Secondly, before this thread gets locked, I’d feel terribly negligent if I didn’t
address a couple of points that Nossie has clearly overlooked…Nossie, the image was posted in a critique forum, yet you have still managed to miss the
fact that it is just the image, and not the subject of the image, that was posted for
critique. You just don’t seem to be getting the point of all this, which doesn’t
say much for your knowledge of photography. Instead you continue to harp on to the
effect that you think my wife could be more attractive if she could only change her
smile to your idea of how she should look. You are, like everyone else here, perfectly
entitled to your own opinion of my wife’s looks, it matters not a jot to me. But it
might be better if you kept personal opinions out of it and concentrated on the job
in hand, namely, critiquing the photograph and not its subject. Not once have you
mentioned composition, light or shadow, contrast or conversion, depth of field, etc.
You did get one thing right though: It doesn’t tell a story. But just to help you
understand better I’ll explain. This is what we in the business of photography call
a ‘candid portrait’ and a story is not actually necessary. Take this on board and
it may help you in your career farther down the road…As for the Old Boys Network, there is one, but it doesn’t require a tally of 5000 posts
to join. Merely a friendly disposition, good manners, an open mind, a love of the art
of photography and, if you can afford it, any sort of camera at all. Some members have
joined the Old Boys Network with their very first post. Something else for you to think about…I personally don’t put pictures up for critique because mostly I don’t really care what
other people think unless they’re paying me to work for them. What good would it do me to read
LoGill going on about masks and levels. I can look at a picture and decide myself if I like it
or not but I can’t do it for a client so why would you do it for me?You seem to be under the impression that you have nothing left to learn? I like your confidence,
but I wouldn’t put all my faith in it. The site here is populated by all types of photographers,
hobbyists, amateurs, professionals, and a few whose level of expertise and knowledge in the
field is such that it defies defintion. I’m reluctant to use the word ‘genius’, but that doesn’t
mean it hasn’t crossed my mind. Even those select few will post images in the critique forums from
time to time. Everyone has something to learn; those that think they haven’t have the most work
ahead of them…Add to that my own requirement to make her look feminine, elegant and graceful
to show off the delicate woman inside.Oh double dear. It would appear, unbelievable so, that your knowledge of women actually surpasses that
of your knowledge of photography in its deficit. Personally, I think you owe a public apology to every
female member on the site for your crass generalisations of women, but I’ll leave that up to you if
you’re gentleman enough…This is not the first time I’ve almost been accused of being an intellectual. Slightly better, I should
think, than most definitely being accused of being an arse…Thanks Joseph. The Steinway is currently in storage until such time as I can afford a room large
enough to house it. In the meantime, the print looks quite well sitting beside my workstation…Ken, I appreciate your comments on the image. I wasn’t too fond of the colour version myself, hence
the mono conversion. If it’s a little drab to you, fair enough, though I’m quite happy with the print
myself, as is Rita. As for the name calling, that’s a shovel you really don’t want to pick up…RobMemberps. If ever any of my clients require a heart shaped jigsaw I’ll know where to send them…
